CVC Word Building Pumpkin Activity

There are so many ways to teach CVC words, and for good reason.  CVC words are generally the first words students learn to sound out and read. It’s the beginning of reading fluency and is a crucial step to furthering literacy skills.

This Pumpkin CVC Word Building Activity and Game is the perfect hands-on manipulative for introducing, strengthening and mastering CVC word building.  Incorporating 30 different CVC words, these CVC word building activities allow students to slow down and identify segmented sounds and their corresponding letter, while challenging them to spell the word with letters.

Every vowel is found in six words each, allowing students to practice short vowel sounds.

Inside You’ll Find:

Getting the Pumpkin CVC Word Building Activity Ready

With both black and white and color versions available, this CVC word building activity and game is easy enough to prep.  What you’ll need:

  • Cardstock or paper
  • Laminator
  • Laminating pouches
  • Paper cutter or scissors

Simply print out onto cardstock (recommended for lasting durability).  Only have black and white printing? Have your students color in the pumpkins for an OT activity!  Using scissors or a paper cutter, cut out the pieces and laminate for longevity.

For storing a center with this many pieces, I recommend using these plastic pencil cases or Ziploc baggies. This will keep all of the pieces in one place, while also keeping them from getting mixed up.

Using the Pumpkin CVC Word Building Activity and Game

These fall CVC word building activities provide a hands-on experience to little learners while strengthening spelling skills, sight word recognition and phonemic awareness.

Start with one picture at a time as students get familiar with the activity.  Students will need to sound the word out and identify which letter corresponds to that sound in order to spell the word.

Begin by giving students the three letters to the word scrambled up.  This allows them to sound the word out and build it but also does not overwhelm them with letter options.  As students progress with their CVC word building skills, mix in more letters at a time to choose from.

Have a student who needs an additional challenge? Have them create additional CVC words with the pumpkin letters, or have them add letters to a CVC word to create a CCVC, CVCe, or CVCC word instead.

The fantastic thing about this printable is how easy it is to modify to your students’ levels.  Still new to CVC words? Use this fall-themed word building activity in a whole group setting, showing students how to sound out and build CVC words.  Use during a center rotation for students who can independently sound out words. Incorporate into a small group lesson for targeted CVC word building. This makes it perfect for either a preschool, kindergarten, or even first grade classroom.
