Let’s face it, pumpkins are fun!
And for our youngest learners, that means bringing in real pumpkins and letting them see the various shapes and sizes of them. They love talking about the funny, spooky, and adorable things pumpkins can be made into.
We start out by exploring our pumpkins and turning it into a science lesson filled with sensory fun! We challenge our memories with a DIY Jack-O-Lantern memory game. Then we take things a step further when we create pumpkins out of pinecones! Yes, pinecones!!
Our classroom focuses on everything pumpkin this time of year! And we wouldn’t want it any other way!
Because pumpkins are a great way to get kids learning without realizing they are learning.
To connect pumpkins with key math concepts, I’ve created this Pumpkin Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity so our kids can review their math facts in a fun hands-on way!

You can use these during math stations, independent work time, or in small review groups.

Getting the Pumpkin Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity Ready
This editable printable is very easy to prep. After you purchase the activity and download it, you’ll need to open the document with the most updated version of Adobe. You’ll then type in the addition or subtraction facts your class is currently working on.
As your students progress and get more successful at this skill, or to differentiate for your students, you can add in higher numbers with more addends.
I like to print these out on cardstock and laminating them before cutting them so it can easily be used year after year.
Using the Pumpkin Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity in your Classroom
Students will start this addition and subtraction game by placing all of the pieces on the floor or table.
They will choose a wheelbarrow number card. I always encourage my students to say the number out loud. This student chose the number 9.
Students will then sort through all the pumpkins looking for addition and subtraction problems that equal the number on the basket. Once the wheelbarrow has all six pumpkins that equal their number, they can pick a new wheelbarrow and start again.
Another way to switch up this activity is to have all of the pumpkins laid out and the students will then sort through all of the addition and subtraction problems according to their answer.
There are so many different ways to implement this pumpkin-themed addition and subtraction activity and personalize it for your students’ needs.
If you have younger students or students who need extra review or practice, you can simplify the activity.
Provide these students with only the addition problems or only the subtraction problems.
They can also be given one addition problem and one subtraction problem. Once they master those skills or lower numbers, you can slowly add in more.
For Preschoolers or students who need one to one correspondence review, you can easily adapt the pumpkin number cards into a simple counting activity. My daughter had a blast counting pumpkin seeds and placing them on the basket cards. You can also find small orange beads or other items that look like little pumpkins.
Whether students are playing the addition and subtraction activity or showing off the mastery of this skill with their pumpkin themed worksheets, they will be having a “harvesting” good time!
