Getting Ice Cream Digraph Sound Match-Up Ready:

Print the match-ups (Color or Black & White), laminate and cut using a paper trimmer.  Gather all of the pieces and place in a plastic container. I love using plastic pencil cases to store centers like these. It keeps everything in one place and does not take up a ton of space.

This obviously doesn’t take a ton of time to put together and makes a wonderful activity to help your kids have fun and learn at the same time.

Doing Ice Cream Digraph Sound Match-Up

Students will start the activity by choosing a scoop with a letter on it . My daughter chose the scoop with the digraph sound “Sh”. Encourage your students to sound out the word to hear the ending sound.

Students will then sort through all of the scoops with pictures looking for the ones that start with the ending sound “Sh”.

Each ice cream cone has six scoops with a visual. Once the ice cream cone has has six scoops representing the corresponding letter, they can move on to a new letter and start again.

Another way this could be completed, is to have all of the ice cream cones laid out on a table or even the floor. Students will then sort through all of the scoops and place each one at the correct cone.

Early learners will absolutely LOVE this hands-on Ice Cream Digraph Sound Match Ups! The perfect addition to your early literacy centers.

If you have younger (or struggling) students that would be overwhelmed by the amount of puzzle pieces in this activity, scale it back. Provide them with only a few of the letters. Once they master those, you can slowly add in more.

Are you working on digraph sounds in your early literacy centers? This Ice Cream Digraph Sound Match Ups is the PERFECT addition!
