Bring Thanksgiving into your literacy centers with this vibrant and engaging Turkey Digraph Match-Up Activity!

Teaching digraphs can be hard and tedious.  They’re these weird blends of letters that make a totally different sound than those two letters separately. And they’re everywhere.  Digraphs are an abstract idea, but nonetheless, they’re key to literacy and reading.

So let’s liven up your classroom and make learning digraphs fun and engaging with the perfect activity! Our Digraph Match-Up games are some of our best-selling digraph products.  With themes like ice cream, apples, snowman and major holidays, our digraph match-up games for little learners are staples for your literacy centers.

Introduce digraphs into your computer center as well with these digital digraph activities. Ensuring that students practice hearing, reading, and writing digraphs is key to mastering this literacy skill!

Turkey Digraph Match-Up

Your little learners are going to love this fun fall-themed turkey digraph game when they see the completed turkeys with their colorful plumage!  With our classic clipart pictures, students will identify, listen and match the digraphs to make a Thanksgiving Turkey.

Focusing on both beginning and ending digraphs, this Thanksgiving digraph match-up activity for students will help sharpen phonemic awareness and strengthen word building skills.  It’s the perfect holiday digraph activity for kindergarten and first grade students.

Inside You’ll Find:

  • Match Up’s for beginning and ending digraphs (ch, ph, sh, th, wh, -ch, -ck, -sh, and -th)
  • 6 feather pictures per digraph
  • 2 versions: black and white and color

Offering both colored and black and white options is important to us as we know many schools do not have color printing available.  You can always print the black and white version onto colorful fall-themed cardstock or have your students color in the Turkey printables during a rainy-day recess or free time!

Getting the Turkey Digraph Activity Ready

Once you have purchased and downloaded the Turkey Digraph Match-up Thanksgiving Activity, you simply need to print, cut and laminate!  We highly recommend printing onto cardstock so you can reuse this literacy match-up activity every fall.

What you’ll need:

  • Laminator
  • Laminating pouches
  • Cardstock or paper
  • Scissors

Once printed, cut out each feather and turkey and laminate.  This will ensure maximum durability!  For storing purposes, we recommend keeping the turkey feathers grouped together in a sandwich bag or with rubber bands.  Keep the turkey digraphs together with binder clips, and store the entire resource in a gallon-sized Ziploc or a pencil box.

Using the Turkey Digraph Match-Up

Start the littlest learners with 2-3 digraph turkey blends in front of them and identify the digraph sounds.  When they choose a feather, students must first identify the image and then the digraph they hear for that image.  Once the digraph has been recognized by listening to the word, have students match it up to the corresponding turkey with that digraph.  Continue until each turkey has all six feathers.

This adorable Thanksgiving digraph activity can be utilized in multiple ways in the classroom.  Teaching a whole group lesson on digraphs?  Pass out the turkey feathers to your students and create a classroom game of matching the feathers to the appropriate turkey digraph.

Use them within your literacy centers for independent work.  Students can practice matching up 2-3 turkeys by naming each image out loud to a partner.  Challenge students to write down the corresponding words to the image.

Match-up games are also GREAT tools for small group intervention.  Students can work in pairs or as a small group to name each image, identify the beginning or ending digraph, and match it to the appropriate letter blend.
