Liven up your classroom with this adorable Snowman Digraph Match-Up activity! Little learners always love snowmen all winter long and they make learning so much fun.

Once winter sets in and the fun of Christmas has come and gone, snowmen activities are a great way to liven up a classroom in the midst of dreary weather!

To keep learning fun and exciting we bring the snow into the classroom by making Snowflake Window Clings and a Snowstorm in a Jar. We learn with snow by incorporating other Snowmen Match-Ups, and Snowman Rhyming Puzzles.

Our students love building these Snowball cvc words even when they can’t throw snowballs!

Winter is also an excellent excuse to break out this Hot Chocolate science experiment for some hands-on learning and science fun!

There are a lot of ways to make those dreary winter months more exciting!

Snow and Snowman-themed activities are a great way to get students excited about learning after the fun of Christmas has gone.

Break up the day with some hands-on Winter Crafts or Winter Activities where they will learn without realizing they’re learning.

Keep the cold weather outside, and bring the snow into the classroom by reading one (or all!) of these Winter Books perfect for little learners.

Snowman Digraph Match-Up

This is an entertaining way to introduce and practice decoding unfamiliar words using letter patterns!

This center is a great way to help our emerging readers build on their phonological awareness. This snowman themed printable is ideal for Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms.

It works perfectly with literacy stations, independent work, or in small review groups. Depending on your students’ abilities, it can be used as a review or a challenge.

Inside You’ll Find:

  • 9 snowman head digraph cutouts covering common digraphs such as: ph, sh, th, wh, ch, ck both at the beginning of a word and at an end of the word
  • 9 sheets of snowman snowballs, each with 6 different pictures.
  • This resource also comes in black and white to save on ink, so it comes with 24 pages total.

Getting the Snowman Digraph Match-Up Ready

This match-up is easy to prep and put together. After you purchase the match-up and download it, you’ll print it out (color or black and white) and cut the pieces out.

I recommend printing these out on cardstock and laminating them before you cut them so they can easily be used year after year.

Storing Your Match-Ups

Gather up the activity and place it in a plastic container. I love using plastic pencil cases to store centers like these. It keeps everything in one place and does not take up a ton of space.

Here’s how I keep my Language Arts materials organized throughout the year.

Using the Snowman Digraph Match-Up

Students will start the activity by choosing a snowman head with a digraph on it. This student chose the box with the digraph ck.

They will then sort through all of the snowman body pieces with pictures looking for the ones that have the digraph ck.

You may want to have your students work in small groups the first time they try to complete the Snowman Digraph Match-Up.

Once their snowman is filled with snowballs representing the matching digraphs, they can pick a new digraph and start again.

An additional way to differentiate this activity is to have all of the snowman heads placed on a table or the floor. Students will then sort through all of the snowballs and stack each one on the matching snowman head.

You can also simplify the activity by giving your students who need more support only two of the snowman heads and the matching snowballs at one time.

Once they’ve grasped the concept, you can slowly add in more snowman heads and snowballs.

Your students will love playing with snowmen and learning about digraphs at the same time with this fun winter-themed literacy activity!
