Looking for a festive way to teach math skills? Try our St. Patrick's Day Number Match-Up activity!

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th and it’s always so fun to celebrate in the classroom! My students love to make leprechaun traps and look for rainbows and pots of gold. And since there aren’t too many other special happenings in March, I enjoy using the St. Patrick’s Day theme all month long. Shamrocks, leprechauns, gold coins, and rainbows are the perfect way to end winter. And this St. Patrick’s Day Number Match-Up activity is an exciting hands-on way to teach math concepts using some spring holiday cheer.

With the St. Patrick’s Day theme in mind, we fill our literacy centers with activities like these cvc puzzles and blends match-up. We practice spelling names with this name building activity. Then, when the 17th comes along (or whatever day we celebrate in the classroom), we break out the St. Patrick’s Day bingo. It is always a hit and is so easy to prep and play! Read about all things green with these books that are full of St. Patrick’s Day adventure.

This St. Patrick’s Day Match-Up is ideal for working on number recognition and counting. But are you looking for even more St. Patrick’s Day math activities? This first to 20 game is a great way to practice counting. And for our more advanced learners, this St. Patrick’s Day editable addition and subtraction activity is perfect for differentiating our centers.

What you’ll need to prep this Math Match-Up

  • Copy paper, Colored copy paper, or Cardstock
  • Laminator
  • Laminating Sheets
  • Scissors

After purchasing your St. Patrick’s Day number match-up game, you can start printing and prepping! You have a few options when it comes to printing this hands-on math game. You can choose to print the color version on paper or cardstock or you can choose to print the black & white version on colored copy paper or white copy paper.

Whatever you print on, we highly suggest laminating all of the pieces before giving them to your students to use. After laminating, I like to cut the gold coins and keep them in a separate baggie from the pot of gold mats, so that I am ready to pull them out at any time. You can choose whether to cut out the pots of gold or to leave them as a whole page.

Using the St. Patrick’s Day Number Match-Up

Once the match-ups are printed and prepped, it’s time to decide how to use them. I like to give them to my students in small batches, maybe only numbers 1-5, 5-10, etc. Or even a mix of numbers, but only a few numbers at a time. Then, when the students are in that center, they can choose a pot of gold mat and search for the gold coins that match the number.

This counting and matching game for St. Patrick’s Day is great for differentiating. You can pick the numbers you want your students to work on and how many, plus, there are always new and engaging ways to challenge your students who need a little bit more!

Your students will love practicing math skills with our St. Patrick's Day Number Match-Up activity. Counting to 5

One of my favorite ways to help my students who need a challenge is to give them a timer and have them try to find all of the gold coins for each number in a certain time. This helps them improve their subitizing skills which carries over to so many other math skills that they’ll be working on in the future.

A fun and festive way to have your students play this St. Patrick’s Day number recognition game is to have an actual “pot of gold” (AKA, an empty pot or toy cauldron) that you can put the gold coin number cards in. This way, they have to search through the pot of gold, not just a stack of paper, to find the right numbers. I guarantee your students will be begging to return to the math center the next day!
