Getting Popcorn Initial Sound and Number Match-Ups Ready
Print the match-ups (Color or Black & White), laminate and cut. Gather all of the pieces and place in a plastic container. I love using plastic shoe boxes to store centers like these. It keeps everything in one place and does not take up a ton of space.
This obviously doesn’t take a ton of time to put together and makes a wonderful activity to help your kids have fun and learn at the same time.
Doing Popcorn Initial Sound and Number Match-Ups
Students will start the activity by choosing an popcorn box with either a number or letter. My daughter was doing the initial sound match-up and choose the popcorn box with the letter Pp.
Students will then sort through all of the popcorn pieces with pictures looking for the ones that start with the letter Pp.
Each popcorn box has six pieces of popcorn. Once the box has has six pieces representing the corresponding letter (or number), they can move on to a new letter (or number) and start again.
Another way this could be completed, is to have all of the popcorn boxes laid out on a table or even the floor. Students will then sort through all of the popcorn pieces and place each one at the correct box.
If you have younger (or struggling) students that would be overwhelmed by the number of pieces in this activity, scale it back. Provide them with only a few of the numbers or letters. Once they master those, you can slowly add in more.
