Materials Needed for Popcorn Middle Sound Match-Up:
Getting Popcorn Middle Sound Match-Up Ready:
Purchase and print the popcorn middle sound match-ups (Color or Black & White), laminate and cut using a paper trimmer. Gather all of the pieces and place in a plastic container. I love using plastic pencil cases to store centers like these. It keeps everything in one place and does not take up a ton of space.
This obviously doesn’t take a ton of time to put together and makes a wonderful activity to help your kids have fun and learn at the same time.

Doing Popcorn Middle Sound Match-Up
Students will start the activity by choosing a popcorn bucket with a letter on it . My daughter chose the popcorn bucket with the “short i”. Encourage your students to sound out the word so they can distinguish between short and long vowel sounds.

Students will then sort through all of the popcorn kernels with pictures looking for the ones that start with the “short i”.

Each popcorn bucket has six popcorn kernels with a visual. Once the popcorn bucket has has six popcorn kernels representing the corresponding letter, they can move on to a new letter and start again.

Another way this could be completed, is to have all of the popcorn buckets laid out on a table or even the floor. Students will then sort through all of the popcorn kernels and place each one at the correct popcorn bucket.
If you have younger (or struggling) students that would be overwhelmed by the amount of puzzle pieces in this activity, scale it back. Provide them with only a few of the letters. Once they master those, you can slowly add in more.
