Fall is just around the corner and we are still feeling that back-to-school excitement and vibes!  Students and teachers alike are getting into their groove, and the thrill of seeing friends and colleagues still hangs in the air.

In your classroom you are probably reading back-to-school stories, doing all the alphabet crafts, counting activities, and of course, name practice. Name practice is such a HUGE part of beginning literacy for little learners!  It is one of the first  writing skills that students learn and it is empowering to little learners.

There are so many great ways to teach little learners their names.  Preschoolers need to first be able to identify the letters in their name and be able to sort those letters into the correct order.  Activities like our Flower Pot Names or Apple Stack Names are perfect for this stage of learning.

Once students can recognize and spell their name, they’ll need to learn to write it. This stage can be more challenging for little learners to master as this is often their first writing experience!  They are so used to having the freedom to scribble, draw and color as they want.  Making name writing engaging and fun is no easy feat, but we are here to help!

What better way to improve your students’ handwriting than with writing their own name with pencils, crayons, highlighters and markers?

In addition to this worksheet, here are some of the Best Writing Teaching Tools for Little Learners. And why not teach them science while helping them improve their handwriting with my Apple Writing Center learning activity?

Don’t forget to check out all of our Literacy Activities for more great learning tools for your students!

This easy to use and editable name writing activity is simple, yet brilliant.  With four variations of your learner’s name, this name writing worksheet will have your preschoolers writing their name four different ways.

Beginning with a pencil, your preschoolers will also write their names using a marker, crayon and highlighter.  Each of these writing tools are different in size, texture and writing flexibility.  This will ensure your students begin building muscle memory for that tripod grip.

Using Name Writing Worksheets with Little Learners

Having a name writing activity for little learners is a big step towards establishing literacy in your classroom. Learning to write their names is a milestone in Preschool and deserves to be celebrated. This editable name writing worksheet strengthens students’ fine motor skills by having them write their name with four different writing utensils: pencil, crayon, marker and highlighter.

Although students are writing their name in the exact same format (size & font), having them write with a variety of tools will help strengthen their fine motor skills and reinforce good tri-finger grasp.

This Editable Name Writing Worksheet for little learners also gives students room for creativity with color choice.  Encourage students to try different colors for each writing tool they choose.
