February is always that welcomed short month after the long month of January. And even though it is a shorter month, it has SO many themes and things to celebrate and study in the classroom. Embrace the magic of February learning with Pre-K math and literacy centers: perfectly crafted to inspire young minds and encourage endless curiosity!
Are you a Valentine’s Day fan or are you someone who thinks it’s just a made-up holiday to boost flower and greeting card sales? I, for one, LOVE Valentine’s Day because I love love, and I love celebrating, so why wouldn’t I love to celebrate love?!
Before we reach Valentine’s Day, we start off the month learning about and celebrating Groundhog Day. We make fun crafts like this paper plate groundhog craft, and we work on counting with our groundhog first to twenty mats. We learn all about groundhogs with this collection of books and this science unit. The Groundhog Animal Study unit is packed full of engaging February pre-k activities that the students will love.
After Groundhog Day, we jump right into everything Valentine’s related! I make different versions of this heart-matching puzzle activity that will help my students review both math and literacy skills. Using it for number recognition is one of my favorite heart-themed math activities!
We also make this thumbprint craft to hang on a bulletin board or send home as decoration. It’s the easiest Valentine’s pre-k craft that works on fine motor skills too!
After Valentine’s Day, we make sure to celebrate Dental Health Month by learning all about taking care of our teeth with this science unit. I told you there were SO many topics and themes to study during February!
Another way I love to use all of the themes and celebrations in February is to incorporate them into my math and literacy centers. That’s why we made these Math and Literacy Centers for Pre-k!
These centers take all of the fun February themes and use them to help our little learners practice and review crucial math and literacy skills. Plus, they’re easy to use, and the students LOVE getting each new center.

Using the February Pre-k Centers
Once you purchase and download the center bundle, you can look through everything that you now own! You’ll notice how each subject is broken into five different categories of centers, and then there are four centers within each category.
Once you have taken a peek at the centers, make a list of what needs to be printed, or better yet, print them out immediately! Once printed, you can organize your materials into piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. We always recommend laminating as much as possible so that you can reuse parts of the centers each and every year without re-printing everything.
Next, you can decide how you want to use the centers. They are created to have one type of each center per week in the month, but some teachers enjoy using them all month long. Additionally, many teachers use some of the centers, like the poetry centers or write the rooms, as whole-class lessons and activities.
No matter how or when you choose to use the materials with your students, our greatest piece of advice is to model, model, model! Show your students exactly how to use the materials and let them know your expectations. This will help your students become more independent with the centers over time.
Suggested Materials:
February Literacy Activities for Pre-k
Pocket Chart and Match-Up Activities
A pocket chart and match-up center is always fun! If you don’t have a pocket chart, just use a space big enough for your students to spread out the pieces, like on a table or the floor. The four February pocket chart and match-up centers include a beginning sound match-up, a letters-words-pictures sort, a sentence scramble activity, and a sequencing activity that students can use to practice retelling the steps of mailing a valentine. These Valentine’s literacy activities will surely make your students forget that they’re even learning!
Poetry Center
Our poetry centers come with four poems, three original monthly-themed poems and one familiar nursery rhyme. The materials include notebooks and posters, plus pocket chart pieces for retelling. The poems for February are Humpty Dumpty, a poem about groundhogs, one about a polar bear, and one about Valentine’s Day. These pre-k February reading activities are perfect for whole group instruction, centers, or a mix of both!
Writing Center
The February writing centers come with four sets of word cards that cover these topics: dental health, ice cream sundaes, pets, and Valentine’s Day. Additionally, the center includes differentiated writing pages for your students to use to draw and write all month long!
Puzzles and Write & Wipe Activities
The February literacy activities come with two puzzles and two write and wipe centers. The activities cover skills including letter ID, initial sounds, ending sounds, and rhyming. The puzzles are great to use in a center or as early finisher work, and the write and wipes come with a black and white version in case you want to use them as February and Valentine’s Day worksheets instead.
Write the Room
If you are looking to encourage movement around the classroom this February, the write the room centers that come inside this bundle are perfect for you! Write the rooms are an innovative way to teach pre-k math and literacy in February, and this bundle comes with EIGHT of them. The four literacy write the room centers cover these skills: alliteration, beginning sounds, compound words, and syllables.
February Math Centers for Pre-k
Dice Games
I love dice games because they are so easy and simple to prep! All you need is the game and some dice. The February centers come with four fun Valentine’s Day pre-k games including a “Build a Love Bug” game, a color-by-code activity, a roll and cover or color game, and a roll and graph game.
Partner Games
If you’re looking for more simple pre-k math games for February, then the four partner games that come in this center bundle are going to be your favorite! Your students can review math skills while working with a partner and playing a card game, board game, race to 10 game, and a spin and cover game.
Puzzles and Match-Ups
If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m pretty excited to tell you all about these centers. I truly think that exploring math and literacy fundamentals with these pre-k February centers makes learning and teaching so much more fun! And that doesn’t stop with the math puzzles and match-ups that are in the bundle. The puzzles will help your students practice counting and sorting by color. The match-ups include an activity to practice patterns and a shapes match-up that will fit in perfectly with your February shape lessons for pre-k. There are so many different ways you can incorporate these centers into your daily schedule!
Write and Wipe Centers
One of my favorite center types in the bundle is the write and wipe activities. I love that I can laminate them, or put them in page protectors, and have the kids reuse them again and again. I also love that I can print out the black & white versions and send them home for extra practice or use them as consumable worksheets. The four math write and wipe centers will help your pre-k students practice adding, number sense, sorting, and subtracting.
Write the Room
Remember when I told you that you would have EIGHT write the rooms when you download this bundle? Well, the first four were for literacy but now we’re talking math! These February pre-k math centers will have your students moving around while practicing measuring length, working with ordinal numbers, identifying and building patterns, and subtracting.
