Dive into an exciting Pre-K Ocean Habitat Science Unit, exploring marine life and the wonders of the ocean. Engage young learners with hands-on activities and educational experiences.

The ocean is such a magical place! I travel to the beach at least a few times a year to soak up some of that ocean magic for myself. Luckily, I can also bring this magic into the classroom with all the wonderful resources available to discover the ocean. Exploring the ocean can be so fun for our littlest learners! That’s why I created this Pre-K Ocean Habitat Science Unit.

We can start off by introducing the topic of the ocean with this collection of ocean read-alouds and these I See Ocean Animals Interactive Readers. Then we add in some math with our Ocean Count and Clip Cards. My students are thrilled with any activity that is hands-on, so I like to engage them in learning about the ocean with this ocean sensory bin sort activity. We enjoy crafts like this J is for Jellyfish activity and we fit in as many of these ocean animal crafts as possible.

But to really make my students understand the ocean habitat and marine life, I use this Pre-k Ocean Habitat Science Unit. This unit is full of interesting and engaging materials that peak my students’ interest and make the magic of the ocean come alive inside the classroom. Our Pre-K Habitats Mega Bundle will give you 9 different habitats. If you’re looking for a more advanced ocean unit or wanting to differentiate take a look at our Kindergarten Ocean Habitat Unit.

Using the Pre-K Ocean Habitat Science Unit

After you purchase and download the Pre-k Ocean Habitat Science Unit, you can look at all the available materials and begin to make plans for implementing the activities into your own classroom. You can use our provided lesson plans as a starting point, or pick and choose the materials that work best for you. Once you decide what pre-k ocean materials you’ll be using, make a plan or begin to print, prep, and copy the materials. We always suggest printing things that can be reused, like the writing center, definition posters, centers,  etc., on cardstock and/or laminating them so that they last longer. To help you understand all that is included in this unit, let’s take a deeper look at the ocean science materials!

Ocean Unit Overview

All of our science units come with a unit overview that gives you a glimpse of everything that is included in the unit and suggestions on how to use the materials. The pre-k ocean overview features six pages of unit information to help you when planning your unit study.

Lesson Plans

In all of our science units, we provide week-long lesson plans to help guide you in structuring the unit. In this pre-k ocean life science unit, you’ll receive a week of ideas for teaching. You can use the lesson plans as written, or you can take inspiration and ideas from the plans and make it work for your own science time.

At-Home Letter

We are always looking for ways to get families involved in their child’s learning. That’s why we provide a half-page at-home letter that gives families a quick overview of what their child is currently learning about in science and one or two ways that they can connect to the topic at home. I send these letters home either the first day of the unit or at the end of the week prior.

Teacher Guide

Since we don’t expect you to be an ocean habitat expert, we’ve put together some interesting facts and information that will help you when you’re teaching this unit. I like to read through the teacher guide before starting the unit, so I’m prepared when little hands shoot up to ask me things I may not know about the ocean habitat!

Science Center and Science Questions

Use our provided science center suggestions and science questions list to engage your students in hands-on learning and discussions about the ocean habitat. These are great for getting your students to use their critical thinking skills.

Sensory Bin

Who doesn’t love a good sensory bin? My pre-k kids go crazy for anything that is put into a bin – or a bucket, or a box – that I tell them they can play with. This unit includes directions for making a sensory bin that will have your students excited to explore the ocean habitat and sea creatures.

Book, Video, and Song Lists

I don’t know about you but when I’m teaching a new topic, I am always searching for songs, books, and videos related to the subject that I can play or read in transition times or as the “hook” in our daily science lesson. That’s why we’ve created lists of some excellent ocean habitat books, videos, and songs for you to refer to while teaching.

Discover the magic of the underwater world with our Pre-K Ocean Habitat Science Unit. Engaging lessons and fun-filled adventures await as children explore the ocean and its diverse ecosystem.

Ocean Science Lesson Content:

Ocean PowerPoint and Posters

To introduce the ocean habitat, we’ve created a PowerPoint with matching printable posters that includes age-appropriate facts about the ocean habitat. Students will be drawn in with these real-life pictures and being able to see ocean life up close!

Anchor Chart Materials

Throughout the unit, your students will be learning more and more. We’ve provided an anchor chart header and seashell template for you to make an anchor chart to add facts to all week long. Have students help you write new pieces of information onto seashells and add it to the chart. This can also be used before the unit to assess what students already know.

Ocean habitat animal match center

Animal Match Center

After using the Ocean PowerPoint and posters to learn about the ocean habitat and the animals that live there, we’ve created an animal match activity that can be used in a center to have students practice identifying animals that live in the ocean.

Ocean Emergent Reader

The ocean emergent reader in this unit includes real-life pictures and some of the facts from the PowerPoint and posters so that your students can review what kinds of things they would see “under the sea!” This reader is great to put in your reading, or library, center.

My Habitat Book for prek students

My Habitat Book

After spending a few days learning about the different plants and animals that reside in the ocean habitat, students can complete a habitat book to show what they’ve learned.

Habitat Slider

I love using visuals to review information, which is why we created habitat sliders for all of our habitat units. With these sliders, students can remember which plants and animals call the ocean habitat home.

Animal & Plant Cards

And since you can never have too many visuals, we’ve added picture cards of the ocean animals and plants to be displayed on the board, in your writing center, science center, or on each table for students to refer to during the week.

Prek ocean habitat hat

Ocean Habitat Hat

We are suckers for educational hats! After students explore the ocean habitat, they can show what they’ve learned (to everyone they pass!) by making and wearing an adorable ocean habitat hat.

Ocean Habitat Craft

No matter what I’m teaching, I always find a way to fit a craft in! The ocean habitat craft is a great way to culminate the unit or to use anytime “just because.” We provide directions and templates, and there are even options to add writing to the activity.

Ocean habitat writing unit for prek students

Bonus Materials:

Writing Center

So much learning occurs when we give our students a little guidance and then send them on their way. I do this with my writing center. I’ll put up word and picture cards on a certain topic and provide paper for writing and drawing and let the kids create! This pre-k ocean habitat unit comes with word and picture cards, plus different paper options for you to offer to your students.

Definition Posters

With any new topic comes a lot of new vocabulary, which is why we offer definition posters in all of our science units. Use the ocean habitat definition posters to hang up in your classroom and refer to them as you encounter new vocabulary throughout the unit.

Word Wall

With both lowercase and uppercase options, you can add our ocean habitat vocab words to your word wall as you introduce new words.

Prek ocean unit circle map

Circle Maps

Circle maps are a fun type of graphic organizer that can be used in whole group, as individual work, or in small groups. You can use our ocean habitat circle maps at the beginning of the unit to see what your students already know about ocean life science, or as you go through the unit to display your students’ knowledge. Of course, if you don’t have writers yet, students can draw on the maps or you can complete it as a class.

The Ocean Habitat song

Habitat Song

The unit comes with posters and lyrics of an ocean habitat song, perfect for you to use as your transition throughout the unit and the week. I like to put a copy in my reading or library center for students to practice with.

STEM Center

Engage your students in hands-on learning about habitats with this habitat STEM center. STEM centers are a great way to get your students thinking deeply about the topic and exploring on their own.
