October is a pretty exciting time of year. I get to decorate my house (and my classroom) with pumpkins and everything fall and Halloween. I get to eat and drink pumpkin spice-flavored treats. And I may even get to put on a sweater if this Texas weather cooperates and cools off a bit. The only people who love October more than me? My students! As we’re looking to nurture young minds throughout this month, I like to use these Pre-K Math and Literacy Centers. They combine the joy of the season with exciting learning.
I don’t know about you, but something about the anticipation of wearing costumes and getting candy keeps my kids at a level ten of excitement all month long. Instead of fighting it, I choose to play into it. I fill my classroom with October-themed games, fall crafts, and Halloween books to make our learning fun.
I teach about pumpkins with this explore a pumpkin activity and use easy activities like this jack o’lantern memory game to practice whatever skills my kids need to review. I shelve my own fear of spiders to teach my kids all about them with this exciting spider science unit. I even use spaghetti to make this spider sensory bin. We decorate the classroom with these super fun bats to get my students really excited about learning in October!
Another trick I have up my sleeve during October is making every learning activity we do either fall or Halloween-themed. That’s where these Pre-k Math and Literacy Centers for October come in. These centers give me so many options to make learning fun for my students while also fitting in with my theme for the month. These October learning activities will give your students a chance to show what they know this fall!

Using the Pre-k Math and Literacy Centers for October
After you purchase and download the October-focused math and literacy activities for pre-k, look through the digital folders to see everything that you now own! You’ll find that each subject has different categories, and each category has four different centers, or sets of materials. All of the centers come in both color and black & white, and we offer multiple options for many of the activities to make differentiating based on your students’ needs easier.
We always suggest making lists and then piles of what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut. We highly recommend laminating as much as possible so that you can reuse the materials next October, too.
When it comes to using the pre-k math and literacy centers for October, there is no rule book. You can introduce one of each type to your students per week or show them a chunk of them at the beginning of the month. You can use some of the materials in centers, some in small groups, some as whole group activities, or you can even stash some away for sub plans. Many teachers use some of the categories as morning work or early finisher work too.
No matter how you choose to utilize the centers in your classroom, just make sure to teach and model each center to your students as explicitly as possible to ensure they can eventually complete them independently. Setting clear and concise expectations around each type of center will make it easier for students to understand and give you more of a chance to work with small groups, or whatever it is you choose to do while your students are busy in their centers.
