Create a gorgeous rainbow yarn butterfly craft by weaving yarn around your fingers. A fun craft for kids that helps develop their fine motor skills.

My daughter’s school recently did a study on the Life cycle of a butterfly. They had the opportunity to watch caterpillars change into chrysalides and then emerge as beautiful Butterflies. Over 3 weeks, their class raised and fed the butterflies and then released them outdoors!  She has been super excited about them ever since. So, I thought it would be fun to do a Yarn Butterfly Craft to make some of our own for her to keep.

Not only is this Rainbow Yarn Butterfly Craft lovely, but it is perfect to develop some fine-motor skills & is a great sensory experience too!

Materials Needed For The Yarn Butterfly Craft:

  • Acrylic Rainbow Yarn
  • Black Pipe Cleaner or Chenille Sticks
  • Black Pipe Cleaner
  • A large fork (optional)
  • Pompoms, buttons (optional) for pretend play

Making the Yarn Butterfly Craft:

We had this gorgeous multi colored acrylic yarn at home that we were really excited to craft with.

Start by wrapping the yarn around 4 fingers. The rolls have to be slightly loose so that they can slip off the fingers easily.

We wrapped them around 4 fingers about 10 times. These strings are slippery and much fun was had while trying to grasp them between fingers securely. This helps the kids develop they finger muscles and hand eye coordination. The 4 finger roll forms the larger butterfly wings.

To make the smaller wings, continue wrapping the yarn around the two middle fingers now, as shown in the picture. Wrap them gently about 10 times. Teachers & Parents need to ensure the children don’t wrap them too tightly.

This next step is slightly tricky and younger kids will need adult help. Bend a Black pipe cleaner in half and slowly pass it between the middle finger & ring finger.

Bend, and wrap around the other side, while slowly sliding the yarn off your fingers. Be sure to not let the yarn come completely loose.

Once the yarn is out of the fingers, twist the pipe cleaners tightly to secure the yarn and to make tentacles. Cut to size. At this point, the yarn butterfly still looks a little out of shape.

Slowly tug the yarn curls to make them equal size. Cut the loose ends of the yarn to size.

This activity promotes fine motor development and is also a great sensory experience.  The softness of the yarn running through your fingers feels great!

These beautiful Yarn Butterflies are a wonderful craft for older toddlers, preschoolers, or elementary kids to make as the Spring & Summer flowers usher in some real life butterflies near your homes & classrooms. These perfectly complement our Bee Finger Puppet Craft & Summer Crafts for Little Learners
