Today we’re sharing a super cute I Love Dad Thumbprint Craft. This thumbprint art is personalized with the child’s thumbprints, so Dad will love it. Choose Dad’s favorite colors and have fun making this for him! This craft is part of the Thumbprint Art series, and is also a great fine motor craft for preschool and kindergartners. And with Father’s Day right around the corner, this craft can be done in no time at all.

Want a creative and personalized gift idea for dad? Make him an extra special piece of artwork with this Father's Day Thumbprint craft!

Materials Needed for the I Love Dad Father’s Day Thumbprint Craft:

  • I Love Dad Template (download below!)
  • White Construction Paper
  • Colored Cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Painters Tape
  • Paint – you could use dad’s favorite colors

Use Dad's favorite colors when you make this Father's Day Thumbprint craft for an extra special touch!

Getting the Father’s Day Thumbprint Craft Ready:

To get this craft ready, you’ll need to print the template onto cardstock. Printing onto colored cardstock works best, as it contrasts with the white paper that students will be using for the craft.  Alternatively, you can print onto white cardstock and trace the template onto colored construction paper.

Get the paint ready for the kids to use by putting it out onto a plate or something the can press their thumb onto.

It also helps to get the tape ready by rolling it into pieces, ready to use to stick the letters and heart down. For this craft, they will need many small, rolled, pieces of tape. Masking tape (painters tape) works best for this. Regular clear tape could tear the background paper.

Your students will LOVE creating this one-of-a-kind I love Dad thumbprint art gift!

Doing the I Love Dad Craft:

The students will start by taping the “I <3 Dad” letters and heart down.  It is best to use a piece of rolled tape on each end of the letters so that no edges are sticking up for paint to get under.

Next, choose a color that you think Dad will like, and begin making thumbprints all around the edges of the letters and heart.  Be sure to fill in the gaps with more thumbprints.

Give dad a personalized keepsake this year with this free I Love Dad thumbprint craft.

Continue making thumbprints around each letter, and then begin making more and more away from the letters, scattering them around the page.

Instruct children to use their father's favorite colors when you create this I Love Dad thumbprint craft.

Next, you can use another color of paint and make more thumbprints all around the rest of the page. When you get to the corners, it helps to hold the paper down so it doesn’t lift while you make your prints.

He is going to LOVE this Love Dad thumbprint craft!

After the letters and heart are outlined with thumbprints and there are prints all around the paper, let the paint dry.

After the paint dries, slowly pull up each letter and the heart to reveal your art!

Your students are going to LOVE creating this I Love Dad thumbprint craft.

Now your “I Love Dad” is ready to give to Dad on Father’s Day!

Make this I Love Dad thumbprint craft for a personalized keepsake that he'll treasure for years!

I’m sorry. Some school servers won’t allow downloads sometimes. Maybe try downloading it in a new window? Or with a different server?

I’m having the same issue. There is no option beyond choosing which grade I teach…
