There are so many exciting things to do with our youngest learners during the Christmas season.

We enjoy decorating our classrooms and talking about our Christmas trees, Santa, and all of his elves.

Students learn and practice their letters with our Santa Letter Puzzles and make Reindeer Food that brings out the kid in all of us! And to show off our math skills we play our Christmas Number Match-Up game.

Because games and activities during the holiday season is a great way to get kids learning without realizing they’re learning.

So to connect Christmas with literacy we’ve created this Christmas Ending Sound Match-up. Students can segment sounds and phonemes at the ending of words in an enjoyable hands-on way!

Looking for more Christmas literacy and math activities? Be sure to take a look at our Christmas Match-up Bundle.

Christmas Ending Sound Match-Up

Learning letter names and letter sounds is one of the first stages of phonics.

Students are able to notice the differences in letters as they say and hear the sound of letters. Developing an awareness of different ending sounds is an important building block in developing their early literacy skills.

This Christmas Ending Sound Match-Up is great for helping our early readers build their phonological awareness. This themed match-up is perfect for Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms.

You can use it in literacy stations, independent work, or in small review groups. Depending on your students’ abilities, you can use it as a challenge or as a review.

Inside You’ll Find:

  • 14 sheets of Christmas trees covering ending sounds such as Ss, Tt, Ll, Mm etc.
  • 14 sheets with bulbs, each with 6 different pictures in 3 different colors,
  • Another set of 14 sheets with bulbs, with 6 different pictures on each sheet in the same color to make this less of a challenge.
  • This resource also comes in black and white to save on ink, so it comes with 70 pages total.

Getting the Christmas Ending Sound Match-Up Ready

This printable is easy to prep. After you purchase this match-up and download it, you’ll print (color or black and white) and cut using a paper trimmer.  Place all your pieces in a plastic container. For storing centers like this I love using plastic pencil cases. It keeps it all in one place and does not take up a ton of space.

This is how I like to keep my Language Arts materials organized throughout the year.

I recommend printing activities like this on cardstock and laminating them before you cut them so you can easily use them year after year.

Using the Christmas Ending Sound Match-Up

To start this activity students will choose a tree with a letter on it. This student chose the Christmas tree with the letter “Gg.”

They will then sort through all of the light bulb pieces with pictures looking for the ones that have the ending sound /g/. The first time students try to complete the Christmas Ending Sound Match-Up you may want to have them work in small groups.

Once they decorate their tree with the bulbs representing the corresponding ending sound, they can move on to a new letter and start again.

This activity can also be completed by having all the trees laid out on a table or on the floor. Students will then sort through all of the bulbs and place each one on the correct tree.

You can differentiate this activity for younger students or students who need extra review or practice. Use the bulb sheets that are only in one color for their corresponding sounds. They will be able to recognize the corresponding letters easier.

Another way you can simplify this activity is to give them two of the Christmas trees and the corresponding bulbs at one time.

Once these are mastered, you can gradually add in more trees and more bulbs.

Whether students are showing off their mastery of ending sounds on their own or working as a group, they will be sure to have a festive time.
