Back-to-School with August Math & Literacy Centers for Pre-K

August is almost here! And with August comes the first day of school! No matter how long I do this, I always get so excited each year to set up my classroom and meet my new crop of students. But before then, explore these engaging August Math & Literacy Centers for your Pre-K students. They are perfect for back-to-school preparation and fun end-of-summer learning.

To start off the school year, I enjoy sending home these welcome notes to get my students excited for the year to come. We start our first few days of school with this Kissing Hand cookie activity. We review all of our new school supplies with these cute clip cards and have tons of laughter and fun with back-to-school bingo. While August is exciting and fun, the learning starts ASAP when the kids get into my classroom! We work on foundational skills with hands-on activities like this pencil name building project and this simple shape pencil craft.

I introduce the letters of the alphabet using all sorts of great resources, including these uppercase alphabet posters. And since I love to get my students learning the routines that we’ll be using all year long as soon as they start school in August, I don’t waste any time teaching digital learning stations with these August back-to-school digital games.

Speaking of routines, one of the most important routines I teach my students immediately is our centers routine! I use centers all year long to help my students practice their skills in a more independent way, while giving me the freedom to work with students one-on-one or in small groups. These August Math and Literacy Centers for Pre-k are the perfect centers to start with!

Using the Pre-k August Math and Literacy Centers

Once you purchase and download the pre-k August activities, you can look through all 40 August pre-k centers. We suggest making a list of what you definitely want to print, copy, laminate, etc. You can save the files to your computer, but you can also always access them from your account in our store from any computer at any time.

Here are some of my favorite tips for using these centers:

  • Prep ahead of time. Have these centers ready to go before you want to use them.
  • Prep to reuse. A lot of the activities can be printed on cardstock and/or laminated or put in page protectors. By doing this, you’re helping out your future self and making next year’s prep much, much easier!
  • Have a plan. Mark in your planner which centers you’re going to introduce each week.
  • Not using everything? Print and save any centers you’re not using for a day where you have some time to fill, need something fresh and exciting, or need something easy to have the kids do with a substitute.
  • Set CLEAR expectations for your students. Build a routine with these centers. Model the directions explicitly and set clear and concise rules and procedures around each type of center.
  • Have fun! These pre-k August centers are sure to find your students having so much fun that they won’t even realize that they’re learning!
