The snow is so much fun…at least for our little learners!

There are so many things to talk about during the winter, and one of our favorite subjects are SNOWMEN! Students love talking about all the different ways they build snowmen or how they will build them one day when they get to play in the snow.

To bring the fun of snow to the classroom we engage in fun science activities like our Snowstorm in a Jar Science Experiment. Our little scientists can’t take their eyes off of their jars as the snowstorm comes to life! And to learn new sight words, we build snowmen with our editable match-up.

As we build on our number sense, students have a blast with our Mitten Snowball Counting Activity.

Our classroom is filled with everything snow this time of year! And we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Because snow and snowmen is a great way to get kids learning without realizing they are learning.

To connect snowmen with key math concepts, I’ve created this Snowman Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity, so our kids can review their math facts in a fun hands-on way!

If you want more ways to bring winter and learning into your classroom, check out these STEM Winter Activities.

Students can practice adding and subtracting with these snowman match ups.

Snowman Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity

Learning and practicing addition and subtraction has never been so exciting! This winter resource will help your little learners practice their math facts and all the ways to make a number.

Since it’s customizable, this snowman-themed editable addition and subtraction printable activity is perfect for Preschool, Kindergarten, and First Grade classrooms.

It’s ideal for math stations, independent work time, or in small review groups.

Inside you will find:

Along with the editable math game, there are editable worksheets that students can complete to assess their understanding of the material.

Getting the Snowman Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity Ready

This editable printable is very easy to prep. After you purchase the activity and download it, you’ll need to open the document with the most updated version of Adobe. You’ll then type in the addition or subtraction facts your class is currently working on.

As your students progress and get more successful at this skill, or to differentiate for your students, you can add in higher numbers with more addends.

I like to print these out on cardstock and laminate them before cutting them so it can easily be used year after year.

Using the Snowman Editable Addition and Subtraction Activity in your Classroom

Students will start their snowman addition and subtraction game by placing all of the pieces on a table or the floor.

They will choose a snowman head with a number on the hat. I always encourage my students to say the number out loud as they choose it. This student chose the number 9.

Students will then sort through all the snowball looking for addition and subtraction problems that equal the number on the snowman’s hat. Once the snowman is built with all six snowballs that equal their number, they can pick a new snowman head and start again.

Another way to switch up this activity is to have all of the snowman heads laid out, and the students will then sort through all of the addition and subtraction problems according to their answer.

There are so many different ways to implement this winter-themed addition and subtraction activity and personalize it for your students’ needs.

If you have younger students or students who may need extra review or practice, you can simplify the activity.

Provide these students with only the addition problems or only the subtraction problems.

They can also be given one addition problem and one subtraction problem at a time. Once they master those skills or lower numbers, you can slowly add in more.

For Preschoolers or students who need one to one correspondence review, you can easily adapt the snowman number cards into a simple counting activity. My daughter had a blast counting buttons and placing them on the snowman. You can also find little snowman erasers or other snowman objects for them to count out.

Whether students are playing the addition and subtraction activity or showing off the mastery of this skill with their snowman themed worksheets, they will be having a good snowy time.
