I love September in the classroom! We start school in August, so by the time September rolls around, everyone is finally in the swing of things, and my classroom is running smoothly. Well…as smoothly as possible! I boost my pre-k curriculum with these Hands-On September Math and Literacy Centers. Curated, engaging, and perfect for the start of the school year.
We spend a lot of time studying apples, fall, and other fun themes during the month of September. We enjoy decorating our classroom with apple-themed activities. Our room looks so cute with these paper plate apples and paper bag apple crafts. We use apple alphabet puzzles as a hands-on way to practice identifying letters, and we build our names with apples using this editable name activity. Plus, my students love to do this apples science unit, especially the taste test part!
As we get further into September, I introduce the season of fall with this fall season science unit. It helps everyone get excited and curious about the new season. This interactive reader is also great to throw into your lesson plans, or to leave with a substitute too!
And while I could study apples and fall all day long, we do have to squeeze in some math and literacy somewhere during the day. That’s where these hands-on September Math and Literacy Centers come in! This resource will take your center rotations to the next level where everyone will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize they’re learning.

How to Use the September Pre-K Math and Literacy Centers
Enhancing pre-k learning with these September Math and Literacy Centers is a guaranteed way to get your students learning, all while having fun. But how does one prep, manage, and store 40 centers for one single month? Let me share some of my favorite tips!
After you purchase and download the September centers, take a look at every center. Send the ones you know you’ll use for sure to the printer, or write down the file names to easily locate them at another time. Make piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. My greatest suggestion is to make sure you prep the centers ahead of time; don’t wait until the night before! Another great idea is to print off whatever you don’t think you’ll be able to fit in and put into your substitute folder/bin.
All of this prep work may sound intimidating at first, but trust me, putting in the work now, especially printing on cardstock and/or laminating anything that can be reused, will make your future self SO grateful.
Most importantly, always make sure to model the centers and give your students clear examples of what’s expected of them. After the first few times, your students will be pros. And this will be even more helpful if you decide to do this every month by grabbing the full year of pre-k centers!
Materials Needed for the Pre-K Math and Literacy Activities for September

Pre-k September Math Centers
Dice Games
The four dice games included in your pre-k fall math centers will find everyone having so much fun that they won’t even realize they’re practicing math skills. The four September dice games for pre-k include a roll-a-scarecrow activity, a roll and graph activity, a roll and cover/color activity that helps students practice colors, and a 2D shapes color by code worksheet.

Partner Games
Partner games are not only great for working on math skills, but they also give your littlest learners the chance to work with their classmates and practice social skills. There are four fall-themed pre-k math partner games in the September centers, covering skills like counting, recognizing numbers on dice, 2D shapes, and number recognition. With a board game, memory game, spinner game, and race-to-the-top game, your pre-k kiddos will be begging to go to this center!

Puzzles and Match-Ups
The September pre-k math activities include two puzzles and two match-ups. The puzzles will help your students review 2D shapes, numbers, and counting. The match-up activities are focused on sorting objects by size and completing patterns. Remember that you can always make puzzles and match-ups self-checking by adding colored dots or numbers to the back of the pieces.

Math Write the Room Activities
Want to know one great thing about the pre-k math and literacy activities for September? They come with EIGHT write the room activities. Four math and four literacy write the room activities to use with your students! I like to use these to break up our day in between lessons, but they can also be used as a center or even put at a center table to be used as task cards. The four September pre-k write the room centers cover skills including comparing size, counting objects to 5, identifying what doesn’t belong, and completing patterns.

Write & Wipe Activities
We enjoy write and wipe activities for practicing math skills so much that we gave you four to use during September! The activities focus on these skills: identifying numbers versus letters, 2D shapes, counting, and identifying colors. Your students will definitely enjoy using dry-erase markers and erasers to practice math skills with these four autumn math centers for pre-k.

PreK Literacy Activities for September
Pocket Chart Activities and Match-Ups
The four pocket chart activities and match-ups are a surefire way to enhance your fall pre-k literacy materials. Your students will have a blast sequencing the steps of how to rake leaves, unscrambling sentences about apples and colors, practicing sorting letters and words, and playing a fun, editable hide-and-seek game. These centers work great in a pocket chart center, a rug center, or any table where the pieces can be spread out.

Write & Wipe Centers and Puzzles
Puzzles and write and wipe centers are so easy to set up and fun for the kids to do. I definitely suggest making these sturdy with cardstock and lamination, but the write and wipe activities could also be put in a page protector. As always, we’ve given you black and white options in case you want them to be consumable. The September write and wipe activities for pre-k literacy are focused on writing skills. One activity will have the students tracing lines and working on grip, control, and other pre-writing skills. The other write and wipe activity is focused on tracing uppercase and lowercase letters. Your pre-k students will be ready to write after working on these two activities! The two September literacy puzzles were made to practice upper and lowercase letters and rhyming words.
Write the Room
Have you used write the room activities with your students before? The first time is a little crazy, something about giving them all that freedom makes the classroom a bit hectic, but after a few times, they get into the routine of the activity and love the independence of it. The four literacy write the room activities for September cover skills like identifying letters versus numbers, beginning sounds, matching uppercase and lowercase letters, and counting syllables. These fun fall pre-k literacy activities will be a great addition to your classroom this September!

Writing
We can’t get enough literacy around here, so of course, we made sure our September centers are packed with autumn-themed pre-k literacy ideas. Our writing centers for September come with four sets of word cards, each covering one of the following themes: feelings, fall, community helpers, and apples. You’ll also receive writing center materials to use with your students this September (and any other time of year) that include writing and drawing papers, alphabet charts, and more. Even if your students are just drawing, scribbling, and/or dictating stories, it’s never too early to create a productive writing center in your classroom!
Poetry Centers
Last but not least is my FAVORITE part of the literacy centers: the four poetry centers! It can be difficult to find poetry that is appropriate for our littlest learners, which is why we’ve created 3 original poems and taken one familiar nursery rhyme for you to use with your students. This month’s poems are all about September, ice cream, and school, and your students will have a blast reading and listening to these simple poems. Each poem comes with pocket chart materials, a poetry notebook to work on, and a poetry journal. A lot of teachers choose to use these resources as whole-class lessons and activities, but putting them in a center works too, especially if you read them to your students first and get them familiar with the poetry. You and your students will love using these pre-k September poetry centers.
