Animals are so much fun! There is so much to learn about different animals and the way they live.
We explore where and how they live and the similarities and differences in their habitats. And we bring animals and literacy together with our Animal Alphabet Letter Crafts. This is a weekly series our little ones get excited about week after week!
So when we learn more about animal habitats and how they survive we begin to explore food chains with these engaging puzzles.
I’ve created another way for students to learn more about the animals in the world around us with this Food Chains Science Unit.
Students will learn about food webs from animal habitats in the Arctic, Antarctic, Desert, Mountain, Savanna, Forest, Freshwater, Ocean, and Rainforest biomes. This pack is great for homeschoolers, kids’ craft activities, or to add to your unit studies!

Getting Food Chains Ready
This particular resource is full of an assortment of activities and centers, therefore, preparation will vary. I will do a quick rundown of each component included.
PowerPoint
This is perfect for introducing and reviewing food chains. Simply start the PowerPoint and click the mouse to introduce the given food chains. Continue this throughout each habitat until you have finished. You can use the Definition Posters or Definition Cards to help teach the vocabulary when going through the PowerPoint.
Habitat Posters and Animal Picture Name Cards
The pictures cover the food chains in nine different habitats. Prior to teaching this lesson, place double-sided tape or an adhesive magnetic strip on the back of each picture card. As you introduce the different pieces of the food chain, place onto or below the habitat picture. You can use the Definition Posters or Definition Cards to help teach the vocabulary when going through the food chains for each habitat. I recommended you laminate this center so that you are able to use it year after year.
Animal Sort
It is recommended that you laminate prior to use. Have students sort the pictures using the word cards. They can sort by: 1) producer, consumer, & decomposer (older grades can add more specific consumers) 2) by what they eat 3) by the food chain (students can put sun under sunlight and then pick out animal for producer and consumer).
Definition Posters
These posters are perfect for teaching students keywords about the food chain. It is recommended that you laminate prior to use for increased durability. You can introduce and leave on the wall while the unit is being taught so that students can refer to the posters whenever they would like.
Definition Cards
These definition cards are perfect for teaching students keywords about the food chain. It is recommended that you laminate prior to use for increased durability. They are great for a small group or individual work. They can also be put into a center for students to play memory.
Worksheets
These worksheets are great for assessing student knowledge on food chains. There are three versions of picture pages. 1) Labeled pictures with regular words 2) labeled pictures with dotted words to be traced 3) pictures with no labels so students have to fill in the blanks. Simply print desired pages and cut both pages in half. Students will cut and glue the pictures into the correct order.

This is a great hands-on way to teach the food chain and check students’ knowledge of the material. There are two different formats that you can choose from. There are step-by-step directions within the product on how to create a mobile.
For each habitat, your class will be able to create a fun food chain craftivity. This is a great manipulative for students to use and be able to talk about all they’ve learned for each particular food chain. They’ll also be able to work on fine motor skills and take their science unit home to share.
