Kids will have a blast with this rainbow-colored density jar! Use this Dissolving Peeps Science Experiment with your class to show the class how the process of dissolving works, and whether some types of liquids dissolve Peeps faster than others. This experiment is a fun way to use up leftover Peeps before or after Easter!

Getting the Dissolving Peeps Science Experiment Ready
Gather these supplies before getting started. This is a demonstration, so you only need to make one set of jars with your class.

Materials needed:
- Marshmallow Peeps
- Several liquids (we used lime juice, vinegar, orange juice, and water)
- Jars
- Timer
Setting Up the Dissolving Peeps Science Experiment
Other than gathering supplies, there is no advanced set-up for this experiment! This experiment is a science demonstration of the concept of dissolving, so you can make one set for the whole class to observe.

Doing the Dissolving Peeps Science Experiment
Discuss the concept of dissolving. Discuss how we used dissolved substances in day-to-day life.
Fill your jars about halfway with each type of liquid. Place a Peep in each one.

Flip your Peeps over about every 20 minutes throughout the day.
At the end of the day, observe the Peeps. You could also try leaving the Peeps in the liquid longer to see how long it takes to completely dissolve a Peep in liquid.
Science Questions to Ask
- Why do some liquids dissolve the Peeps faster?
- What is the best liquid to dissolve Peeps?
- Will changing the temperature of the liquids change how quickly the Peeps dissolve?
The Science Behind the Dissolving Peeps Science Experiment
Peeps are made up of ingredients that are water-soluable. This means they will dissolve in water. Dissolving is the process of a substance being broken up and absorbed by another material. When the Peeps are added to the liquid, the sugar and other ingredients dissolve into the surrounding liquid. The liquids with the higher acidity broke the sugar down faster than the liquids with less acidity.

how long did this take to complete?
Hi there Mary, we started the experiment in the morning and kept flipping the jar throughout the day. Approximately every 20 min. At the end of the day is when we were able to make our observations. Hope you enjoy it.
