We’re back for another Animal Alphabet Letter of the Week Activity! My kindergartener and preschooler have been having a great time learning more about the letters of the alphabet through this hands-on series (check out all our previous letter of the week crafts here). Today we worked on the E is for Elephant craft.
This letter of the week series was designed specifically for preschool and kindergarten students. The crafts include fine motor work (coloring, tracing, cutting and of course gluing) and encourage creativity!
After my preschooler colored a Cheshire-inspired cat for our C is for Cat activity, I was curious what his elephant might look like (I was expecting an Elmer influenced piece of art).
Much to my surprise, he decided basic elephant gray was the way to go this time. I think the elephant came out cute as a button and I’m excited to hang it on our alphabet wall!
Supplies for the Animal Alphabet E is for Elephant Craft
Getting the Letter E Craft Ready
Print enough letter E and craft sheets for every student. You may want to print extras in case students decide they need a do-over for any reason. (Note: There are two types of alphabet pages included in the pack. One includes a place to trace the “E e is for Elephant” sentence and one does not. Choose the sheet that is most appropriate for your children’s abilities.)
Doing the Letter E Craft
Ask each child color their alphabet letters. It might also be fun to do this craft after reading an elephant themed book, Like Elmer, and watch how it inspires beautiful designs all over their letters!
After coloring, children can trace the text below their letters (keep in mind this is optional. There is a page that does not include the tracing text for your convenience).
After the children have finished coloring, pass out the craft sheets. These include an ear, two eyes, a trunk, and a tail. They can color these similar to their elephant or different. It’s all up to them!
Next, children can cut each craft using child-safe scissors. Each letter of the week craft in this series has been thoughtfully planned to include repetition and encourage mastery of scissor skills.
As children progress through the series, they will be cutting circles for eyes, sharp points for teeth/tails, and rounded lines for ears or other parts.
The last step to complete the E is for Elephant letter of the week craft is gluing. There is a picture of a completed craft included in each letter pack so children can reference during this stage.
We are displaying our finished craft on an alphabet wall in our homeschool room, but they would make a great Animal Alphabet book as well!
