At the beginning of the month, we might teach our young learners about Election Day with activities like this emergent reader. Next comes Veteran’s Day, where we can use this emergent reader to discuss the special day and this craft to celebrate. And then of course, we have Thanksgiving towards the end of the month, where we take time to be grateful for all that we have and to spend time with our loved ones. At Thanksgiving time, I love to do fun crafts like this handprint turkey craft and thankful turkey activity to help my young students identify the most important things in their lives.

As you can see, there are so many good November themes for kindergarten. I love to incorporate all of these themes into my centers so that my students feel like they’re celebrating all month long! November Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

Using the November Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

If you’re using the monthly math and literacy centers for the first time, it can seem a little daunting. I mean, 40 centers is A LOT of centers! Here are some suggestions to help you:

• After you purchase the November Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten, prep and plan out the centers the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for kindergarten, you’ll have SO many centers that you won’t know what to do with them all. Take it a month at a time.

• Look through the centers and print what you want to use. Separate into piles of what needs copying, laminating, cutting, etc. Tackle that as you can. These laminating sheets work well and we love this laminator. We’ve used these dice or these foam ones for even more QUIET!

• Depending on how you organize your centers, you might want to give your students all of the options for the entire month, or you might want to break it down into four(ish) weeks. You could have one center for dice games, one for partner games, etc. Or if you do math and literacy centers at the same time, you can pick and choose which ones to use where and when and rotate as you see fit.
• Introduce the directions ahead of time and model using the centers for your students. Set clear expectations for each type of center.
• Most importantly: have fun! These centers are a surefire way to engage your students in learning, laughing, and having fun all throughout the month of November.

November Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
These activities are designed to be used in a pocket chart center, where students can move around the pieces, but this can also be done on the floor or a table. Students can practice sequencing the steps of cooking a turkey, putting together sentences, onset & rime, and reading high-frequency words.

Poetry
Are you always searching for good, age-appropriate poetry for your young students? I love these four poems (3 November poems and 1 nursery rhyme) because they help our students fall in love with the patterns and rhymes of poetry in a kid-friendly way. Use the poetry journal, notebook poems, and pocket chart poem activities to teach each poem and practice other language skills, like high-frequency words and comprehension.

Write & Wipe and Puzzles
With two write-and-wipe activities and two puzzles, these centers are perfect for laminating and pulling out year to year. Using a dry erase marker, students can practice their upper and lowercase letters, beginning sounds, and sight words. Plus, they can have fun building puzzles while reviewing onset & rime and rhyming words.

Write the Room
Write the room activities are some of my favorite activities for the kindergarten classroom! Students love being able to leave their desks and move around the classroom independently, and I love that it’s an easy way to review skills. These November write the room centers cover skills like nouns, segmenting cvc words, and identifying ending sounds.

Writing
It is so important to have an engaging writing center for your students to work independently or with classmates. With four different writing card topics and tons of different writing page options, your students can have new words and topics to write about every week during November. Or introduce them all at the beginning of the month and let them go wild! Either way, your students will love writing with Thanksgiving food words, family and friends words, then and now words, and woodland animal words this month! I love to put the cards on rings so that they stay together, but a pocket chart or basket works great too.

November Math Centers for Kindergarten

Dice Games
These games are exactly what they sound like, games to play with dice! How easy is that? These centers include a Color by Code activity, a Roll and Cover game, a Roll and Graph game, and a Build a Turkey activity. Some of the games, like the roll and graph, come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a plain ol’ regular die! The roll and cover game can be printed and laminated to use over and over, or use the roll and “color” option instead for each child to complete.

Match-Ups and Puzzles
Match-up activities can be done in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor. Whatever works for you! These match-ups and puzzles are also great to laminate if you want to use them again. Your students will love practicing making numbers, sorting heavy and light objects, and identifying coins and 3D shapes with these November math centers.

Partner Games
We all need to play with friends sometime, right? These partner games are easy to set up and can be played in pairs. Your students can work together to play a Race to 10 game, a matching card game, a Spin, Add, and Cover game, and a Turkey Spin and Race board game. They will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize they are practicing several math skills like identifying number words, 3D shapes, and adding.

Write and Wipe
Write and wipe games are meant to be laminated or placed in a page protector to be used over and over again. The kids always love getting to use the dry erase markers. With these November math write and wipe centers, your kindergarten students can practice equal groups, number bonds, skip counting, and 3D shapes, all with just a marker and eraser!

Write the Room
This November, get your students moving with these interactive write the room centers! Covering skills like measuring capacity, identifying coins, number order, and 3D shapes, your students will love exploring the room while practicing their math. Here’s a tip: if you can’t make write the room work in your classroom, use the write the room cards in a basket or on a ring and use them as task cards in a center instead! The recording sheets can be used whether the kids are walking around or seated at a table.

Farm and Color Emergent Reader contains 11 pages of farm and color words. All you need to do is print and cut pages in half, and then you are ready to go! This book is also easy and straightforward to put together – kindergarteners should be able to independently do so.

First, students will read the sentence and then trace the color word. I feel like little kids think anything that involves markers is honestly the best activity ever, so we used markers for tracing.

Afterwards, they will color the picture  according to the directions. This is great for encouraging students to pay attention to exactly what they are reading. It is so easy for students to rush through a book like this, without paying attention.

Farm and Color Emergent Reader can easily be placed in a literacy center or done as a class. Obviously, younger students will need some guidance. My three year old and I completed this book together. She had a blast with it, but obviously needed much more guidance than a kindergarten student would need. When she was tracing the color word, we talked about each letter and how to trace it. We literally did this for each letter. She was most successful when we did this.

She loved being able to color the various pictures and was so excited about making another farm book.  However, she did not understand why she could not color the tractor purple (her favorite color).

Getting Initial Sounds Clip Cards Ready

We highly recommend printing these Initial Sounds Clip Cards onto cardstock for maximum durability. We want you to be able to reuse these for as long as possible! With scissors (or our highly recommended paper cutter), cut each card out and laminate. You’ll be done in minutes!

Supply List

• paper or card stock
• laminating pouches
• laminator
• paper cutter
• clothespins

Keeping things organized and together is key, so I highly recommend using rubber bands or Ziploc baggies for these beginning sounds clip cards. This will keep all of the cards in one place, while also keeping them from getting mixed up.

Using Initial Sounds Clip Cards

In these clip cards for teaching letters sounds, you will receive 26 different cards with an image on each. Have students start by first identifying the image on the card.

Once the picture is recognized, have your little learner isolate the beginning sound and identify what letter corresponds with that sound. Once your learner has found the initial sound, they can circle the letter with a dry erase marker or mark it with a clothespin for an added fine motor twist! Have students continue, completing one card at a time

Our hands-on November science experiments engage students in hands-on science with a seasonal theme. Incorporating learning and doing, while having fun.

We bring pumpkins and math together with our editable pumpkin addition and subtraction game and make adorable feathered paper bag turkey crafts to decorate our classroom.

There are tons of ways to integrate literacy into our Thanksgiving themes. And one great way is with letters and sounds. This turkey theme is a fun way to learn.

Letter recognition is important as it helps our young readers to connect printed text to spoken language.

When we’re able to make learning the alphabet a game, our students will also begin to learn the letter sounds.

And they will start to notice letters around the classroom, around the school, and at home.

Because letters are EVERYWHERE!!!

To bring Thanksgiving and literacy together I’ve created this Thanksgiving Pick and Color Printable.

Preschool and kindergarten students will be able to show what they know with this Thanksgiving-themed activity. It’s perfect for literacy stations, independent work, or small review groups.

Because playing literacy games is a great way to get kids learning without realizing they’re learning.

Using the Thanksgiving Pick and Color Activity

Students will first place the cards in a pile, upside down.

One student will pick a card from the stack. They will identify what is on the card, either the letter or object.

This student picked S, and I always encourage my little learners to say the letter or word out loud. The letter S will then be found on the recording sheet and colored in.

Students will continue until all of the turkeys are colored in.

This student chose the kite so they’re coloring in the “K” turkey.

To differentiate for your students:

When you start out, you can have students work only on with the letter cards. As they progress you can then give them the object cards to identify the sounds and letters.

Once they’ve mastered this, you can mix all the pieces together to give them more variety.

If you have younger students or students struggling with this concept who might be overwhelmed with all the pieces at once, you can differentiate this activity and provide them with only a few letters at a time.

Once they master the pieces you gave them, you can slowly add in more.

Implementing Farm CVC Words

Farm CVC Words  literacy center comes with thirty pages of centers, each page containing a picture of a three letter word on the chicken coup. There are two different word mats available to choose from to better fit the needs of all of your students. It is recommended that you print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability.

The goal of this center is easy – we want students to use their sounds and make words. Students will do this by using the eggs to make the given word on the build a word mat.

For younger (or struggling) students, there is a build a word mat that has the word spelled out already so all students will have to do is match the letters on the egg to the word mat. My daughter was able to do this and loved it, in fact!

When first starting out, I would not give students access to all mats at once. This would most likely be very difficult for them and set them up for possible frustrations and failure. Once students have mastered a small number of mats, keep adding more and eventually they will be able to complete them all without any problem. At the end of the day, you know your students best so set them up for success!

Community Helpers Write and Color the Room comes with 24 community helper picture cards and 2 pages of write the room recording sheets and 3 pages of color the room recording sheets. It is recommended that you print off the picture cards on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. You can laminate the recording sheets if you want them to be reused; however, I typically just print off copies and let students write on the paper itself.

Getting Community Helpers Write and Color the Room Ready

Prior to having students complete this activity, you will want to randomly place the picture cards throughout your classroom. I typically use double sided tape whenever I want to do something like this. It does a great job of keeping small things, such as these, to stay put on the wall.

All that is left is choosing if you will want your students to Write the Room or Color the Room. Write the Room is perfect for older preschool students, kindergarten, and first grade students.

Color the Room is perfect for toddlers and early preschool students. My daughter is three and LOVED doing the Color the Room.

Doing Community Helpers Write and Color the Room

I find that it is best to use clipboards for students when they are completing this activity. This allows them the freedom to walk around the classroom and write or color anywhere. This is also great because students find clipboards amazingly cool! They are instantly engaged in whatever you are doing if you throw in a clipboard.

Students will walk around the room, looking for community helper picture cards that match the numbers on their worksheet. If they are doing color the room, they will color the picture of the card that they find. They will continue this until they have colored every single picture on their worksheet.

If students are doing write the room, they will walk around the room looking for the picture cards that are on their worksheet. They will then write the name of the picture card on the corresponding number. I traced the words on the paper for my daughter and she was able to copy the words. Obviously, for kindergarten, they will be able to write the words on their own.
