After Thanksgiving, staff and students are 100% aware that all we have to do is make it a few more weeks until a nice long holiday break. But somehow, those “few more weeks” are the busiest, longest weeks ever. They’re filled with assessments, conferences, planning, prepping for January…the list goes on and on. 

So, since we already know December will be rough, we do our best to plan easy and fun activities that will keep our students learning and engaged. I love using match-up activities in my centers or as morning work like this editable sight word activity and this Christmas tree number match-up. We keep the little ones busy with exciting wintertime science experiments like these salt crystal ornaments and hot chocolate experiment. As we enjoy our hot chocolate, we read our collection of Christmas books.

Using the December Kindergarten Math and Literacy Centers

Once you purchase and download your centers, look through all 40 files to see what you now own! Make a list of things to print, cut, copy, laminate, etc. Trust me, the more you prep to make them last, the easier the prep will be for years to come. If you print on cardstock and laminate the center materials this year, next year you’ll have a lot less to do.

When you introduce the centers to your students, either all at once, in chunks, or one week at a time, make sure to set explicit expectations for how you want the centers to be used. Model each activity and help your students with them the first few times. This will enable your students to be a lot more independent as the month goes on!

There is no one “right” way to use these centers. You can use them in your stations, as whole group activities, as sub plans, etc. Make them work for you. Once you take a look at all of the centers, you may even find that some of them fit perfectly with your kindergarten winter thematic units, so you may split them up to be done at different times during the season.

However you like to spend your fall, the change in season gives us the perfect opportunity to switch up the themes in our materials and really bring fall to life inside the classroom. We decorate our room with these painted football and paper bag apple crafts. And then we dive right into the season with some fun fall bingo and our stacks of books all about fall.

I love to start fall with all things apple-related, like this apple writing center and apple editable sight word activity. We make counting fun with our apple seed number match-up game. And to add in some STEM, we do our apple boats activity. This hands-on experiment is so much fun that our students are learning without realizing they’re learning.

The unit comes with several easy readers. The “I See Leaves” reader can help students practice reading, numbers, and color words. This is an easy activity to do any time of day or to even leave with a substitute!

What We See and Do Emergent Readers

The two additional emergent readers are focused on what students have already learned about – what people might do and see in the fall. Each reader comes with a real-life picture version, a black & white clipart version, and an interactive cut & paste version.

Fingerplay

My students and I love fingerplays. Any type of song, chant, or rhyme that we can repeat throughout the week as we transition from activity to activity or place to place is a win in my book. This unit comes with a fun fall fingerplay to use with your little ones.

Previously you read that the unit comes with specific sorts for what people wear, see, and do. The unit also comes with a more general fall sort that combines all three categories into one. Use this worksheet if you’re not spending a lot of time going through each topic.

Since we spend so much of August practicing routines and learning procedures, we’re ready to kick things up a notch by September. One of my favorite things about September is that I get to teach while using adorable fall themes. In science, we explore apples with this science unit and become little scientists with these September science experiments.

I put apple activities like this editable sight word game and this number match in my centers or morning work bins. Students enjoy building their names in an apple bucket and playing this fun apple pick and color activity. And we work on fine motor and scissor-cutting skills with this apple craft.

Now that the kids are back into a routine at school, we really want to encourage learning as much as possible. Using the September Learning Centers for Kindergarten

Once you purchase and download your centers, it’s time to get started! You’ll be able to look through all five categories for each subject of centers. From there, you can make a list of which centers you need to print, copy, laminate, cut, etc. If you don’t think you’ll use all of the centers, you can always print a copy and put them in your sub folder! 

One thing that makes these centers great is that there is no one “right” way to use them! Maybe you do math centers and literacy centers at different times of the day, and you can use all of the centers during those times. Maybe you have one center time that includes both subjects, so you might pick and choose which centers to use. Or maybe you’ll put some of the activities in centers and use some of them, like the poetry and write the room activities, as whole class instruction and activities. Make these kindergarten resources work for you and your classroom!

Whichever way you choose to use them, make sure to explicitly teach and model the activities for your students so that they can learn to be independent with them. Set yourself up for success by laminating the reusable pieces, so that you will have them ready for the following September as well!

Kindergarten Math Activities for September

Write the Room

Write the room activities can be used as a center or as a whole class activity! These activities are my students’ favorites because they love getting to use clipboards and roaming around the room. The four math write the room centers for September will help your students practice comparing numbers, putting numbers in order, completing patterns, and sorting and graphing. 

Write & Wipe Activities

The four September write and wipe math centers cover skills including 2D shapes, counting, writing numbers, measuring, and working with positional words. Our write and wipe activities are perfect for laminating or putting in a page protector and using a dry-erase marker, but they also come in black and white if you’d rather use them as a consumable. 

Partner Games

I love the excitement of setting up my classroom and meeting my new students. Before my students arrive for their first day, I pass out, or send, this back-to-school confetti to ease those first day jitters. Once they come to the classroom, I do fun activities with them like this back-to-school bingo. We read The Kissing Hand and make these adorable Chester the Raccoon envelope puppets. Using the August Kindergarten Math & Literacy Centers

With 40 math and literacy centers to use in August with your kindergarteners, it is totally understandable to feel overwhelmed. We have some suggestions to make things easier for you! The first year of prep takes the longest, but prep smart, and next August you’ll have almost everything already ready to go! 

• Prep the centers ahead of the first day of school! After purchasing and downloading the centers, decide which ones you’re going to use as centers, which ones you might save for whole group instruction, etc. 
• Once you check out the available centers, plan out your prep work. Make a list of what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, cut, etc. We always suggest printing things like the write and wipe activities, the puzzles and match-ups, the writing cards, and the write the room cards onto cardstock and/or laminating so that you can reuse them each August. 
• Remember that there is no right way to use these! Teachers use these August kindergarten activities in several different ways. Some teachers use the puzzles and match-ups for morning work, some use the poetry materials as whole group lessons, and some only use the black & white copies to make them consumables. Make the centers work for you! 
• Most importantly, make sure to model the centers explicitly and set clear expectations for all of the different types of centers you will use.This is so important, especially in August, since you’ll be setting the expectation for the entire school year!

Dice games are an easy and fun way to help your students practice important math skills! Sometimes I even hand these out to the entire class as a review after our math lesson. If Dinosaurs Came Back Writing

After reading the story “If the Dinosaurs Came Back”, have a discussion with your students about what the world would be like if dinosaurs were still alive. Use the writing response sheets for students to write and draw what they imagine life would be like.

Dinosaur Writing Center

Another way to fit dinosaur-themed classroom activities into the day is with this dinosaur writing center. With both word and picture cards and differentiated writing pages, your students can write and draw fiction and non-fiction sentences and stories about dinosaurs.

Y’all know by now that we can’t get enough of a good bingo game. So of course we had to make a dinosaur bingo game to go along with this unit. Dinosaur bingo is the perfect way to culminate the unit, or store it away and pull it out on a random rainy day or any day that you need a bit of excitement! 

Label a Dinosaur Activity

After learning about different types of dinosaurs, we’ve created labeling sheets for students to practice showing what they’ve learned about the giant creatures. This activity can be done as a whole group or individually.

Dinosaurs “Could, Had, Was” Activity

After learning about dinosaurs, have your students complete these Dinosaur Could-Had-Was papers with what they have learned about each dinosaur. This can be done independently, in a whole group, or as a brainstorming activity before the Dinosaur Research Writing activity mentioned above.  

Build Your Own Dinosaur Craft

Give your students the provided shape pieces and a blank piece of paper and send them on their way to create their own dinosaur using the shapes. They can even add a sentence to extend the activity and draw a background as well.

Circle Maps

I use circle maps as graphic organizers with my students, either in a whole group setting or as independent student work. Circle maps can be used before teaching about dinosaurs to see what students already know, or after teaching so that students can draw and write about what they’ve learned.

Salt Dough Dino Fossil Activity

As part of the STEM dinosaur activities for kindergarteners in this unit, we’ve provided you with a recipe for salt dough to use with your students. After making the dough, challenge students to create their own fossils that look like the real ones that have been shown throughout the unit.

Dinosaur Egg Experiment

There are a lot of hands-on dinosaur science experiments to use with kids out there, but this dinosaur egg experiment is one of my favorites. Your students can pretend to be paleontologists while taking part in this experiment that only needs basic, common materials to complete.

Since we are welcoming in summer this month, we get ready for the new season with these June-themed science experiments and summer STEM activities. We work on our literacy with summer blend puzzles and an ice cream CVCE word building activity. And while we’re having a blast with ice cream themes, we can add in some math with this number match-up.

Since June falls at the end of the school year, I love to use these daily literacy and daily math journals to review the skills my students have worked hard on all year long. Using the June Kindergarten Centers

Look, I get it, 40 centers is a lot to work with. You are already stressed out, overworked, tired, and have way too many things on your to-do list. But trust me, these June kindergarten learning centers are worth the work. Plus, once you prep them for this year, next year will be a whole lot easier. 

To start, after you purchase and download the centers, make sure you look through everything you have at your disposal. Some teachers like to make a list of the skills and centers and which ones they definitely want to use. These end-of-year centers can be used in centers or stations, or even as whole-group or small-group activities. 

After you decide which centers you want to use and for what, start printing or make a list of what needs to be printed. Separate printables into piles of what needs to be laminated, copied, cut, etc. As you do this, make a note of what could be printed on cardstock and laminated to save for future years. This will cut down prep time in the future and your future self will greatly appreciate it!

And there’s no better way to explore the month of May than reading some of these books from our bugs and insects collection.

Since we’re approaching the end of the year and we need as many engaging activities as we can get, I love to do at least one of these May science experiments a week to keep everyone interested and excited about learning. To show what they know, our students practice the math and literacy skills that they’ve learned all year with these Daily Math Journals and Spiral Literacy Journals.

Using the May Kindergarten Centers

This pack of spring kindergarten centers is full to the brim with engaging activities to keep your students learning all while having fun this May. • Look through the centers ahead of time. Make a list of the centers you intend to use and either print or add to a list of things to print. Kindergarten Literacy Activities for May

Poetry Centers
These kindergarten-friendly poems are perfect for using with your students this spring. With poetry journals and notebooks for four different poems, your students will be poetry pros by the end of the month. There are three original May poems about Mother’s Day, spring, and May, and one nursery rhyme, an old favorite – Mary Had a Little Lamb. Students will practice reading, repeating, and finding rhymes and different words in each poem using the center materials.

Write & Wipe Activities and Puzzles
Both of these activity types should definitely make it to your laminate list! For the month of May, you’ll get two puzzles practicing blends and segmenting CVCC words. You’ll also get two write and wipe activities that focus on digraphs and segmenting CVCC words as well. These fun reading activities for kindergarteners will be great to have on hand this spring. 

Writing Center

Your kindergarten students can practice finding the same middle sound with a CVC pocket chart activity and also practice putting spring sentences together with a sentence scramble activity. Lastly, the sight word hide and seek activity is one of my favorite sight word games for kindergarten.

Write the Room Activities for Literacy
Write the room centers are the best way to get your students out of their seats and reviewing skills. With these May literacy write the room activities, your kindergarten students can practice decoding CVCC and CCVC words, manipulating the middle sound in CVC words, and segmenting CVCC and CCVC words, all themed for May and springtime.
