Any activity that allows someone to use spray bottle is a great activity according to my daughter. So, obviously, this Kids Alphabet Say and Spray Activity was a HUGE hit at our house and I have no doubt it would be a huge hit at your home or in your classroom. This activity is easy and requires very little setup and can be done inside or outside. All you need is a spray bottle and some chalk. We did this activity outside on the driveway, but you can easily do it inside on a chalkboard if you wanted.

Kids Alphabet Say and Spray Activity
Supplies Needed:
- Chalk
- Spray Bottle
- Water
I love that this kids alphabet Say and Spray activity can easily be tailored to whatever age kids you are teaching or whatever age kids you have. Since my daughter is three I tailored everything we did on her level. First I wrote random letters of the alphabet on the driveway. You can see a picture of what I did below.

I would say a letter and then she would spray that particular letter. We also did shapes and numbers. She loved it all!

In addition to teaching whatever topic you choose, this activity is great for helping children develop their fine motor skills. It was neat to see how much her technique improved during the twenty minutes that we did the activity. She had it down by the end. Below is her grip on the water spray at the beginning of the activity. You can see a clear difference from beginning to end.
As you can see, this kids alphabet say and spray activity can also become an activity for learning shapes, sight words, and more. It’s all about incorporating something fun into an education time.
By the end of the activity, it was HOT! I was saying “spray my feet” or “spray my arm” just to cool down. Molly particularly loved “spray Molly”.

For older kids, you can do so many different things too. If you are doing this activity with your class, you can divide them into two groups and turn it into a race. Students can race each other to figure out the answer and spray. Whoever gets it done first, gets a point for their group. A little bit of friendly competition is good every now and then, right?!
Language Arts Ideas:
- letters
- beginning sounds
- ending sounds
- sight words
- word families
- rhyming words
- syllable counting
Math Ideas:
- numbers
- shapes
- addition (You can write numbers on the board and say an addition sentence. Students will then have to solve the problem and spray the number. To make it a little more difficult, write the addition sentences on the board and say a number. They will then have to find which one equals the number you called out.)
- subtraction (same as addition above)
- place value (You can write numbers on the board and tell students “two tens and four ones” and then they will have to find 24 and spray.)
Honestly, the list goes on and on with what you can do. I am sure that you can figure out a way to do this with most topics you are teaching, especially in language arts and math.

I LOVE this activity!! I like to think of activities that can be done outside at least once a week for my kinders and this will be a perfect addition!! Brilliant idea and oh how they will think it is fun and engaging!! Linda Groce
I am so glad that you liked it. The possibilities are really endless and I love how all ages and/or levels can participate. I hope that your kinders enjoy. 🙂
How would you suggest we could use this activity for a child that doesn’t know any identification of letters? I was thinking of also bringing flash cards out and having him look at the flash card and search for that letter.
In this case, should I just do a couple letters at a time? Or do the entire alphabet?
My son is 2.5, will be 3 the end of July and gross motor activities are his favorite as he can’t sit still to learn quite yet. So this is PERFECT for him. I just don’t want to overwhelm him.
Hi Ashley, thank you for reaching out. For our littlest learners, I suggest doing a couple of letters at a time. Also, you can do the activity with him and make it a game say the letters out loud and encourage him to repeat after you. Flash cards are always an option. My main advice is to be consistent and whenever you get the opportunity point out different letters and say the letter and the sound. Repetition will help him on his way to building on his literacy skills. Don’t forget to have fun, when our kids are having fun they don’t even realize how much they’re learning.
Thank you! I love this activity, it is simple yet powerful and so versatile!! Thank you again!
I’m so glad you enjoy it Kelly!
