Today we are sharing a fun craft to help learn the parts of an apple! This is a simple coffee filter craft that uses watercolor paints to create an apple core, skin, leaf, stem, and seeds. This craft is a great one to do in the beginning of the year for preschool, kindergarten, or elementary students, or as a craft to do with apple themed units.

Be sure to check out more of our apple learning activities for early childhood!

This craft is a great extension of our apple math and literacy centers!

I really like using coffee filters for crafts because they are so inexpensive and easy to find. We found a large pack of them at the dollar store and have had it for a long time!

Materials Needed for the Parts of an Apple Coffee Filter Craft:

  • coffee filters
  • scissors
  • watercolor paint
  • paint brush
  • glue
  • paper towel

We used the paper towel to put the coffee filter on to paint on top of to help contain the paint.

Getting the Parts of an Apple Craft Ready:

To get this craft ready, I pre-cut the apple core, leaf, and stem. To do this, simple fold the coffee filter in half, and cut a semi-circle shape out from the rounded side (as shown below).

You will be left with two leaf shapes. Keep one as-is for a leaf, and then cut a rectangle for a stem from the other one.

To paint the stem, we mixed different colors to make brown since we didn’t have brown watercolor paint. First, we painted black, and then painted red, orange, and yellow on top.

Don’t forget to add some seeds! Use black watercolor to make dots for seeds.

Let the coffee filter apple parts dry completely.

Once they are dry, it’s time to glue the stem and leaf to the apple core.
