We love to practice spelling our names with this Pumpkin Name Building Activity. And I love to use these October Math and Literacy Centers for pre-k that are full of fun pumpkin learning activities. We hear lots of giggles in the classroom with our jack o’lantern memory game.

It’s important we keep our students engaged and excited during this tedious month. Using these January learning activities and winter centers, we can make this long month fun! 

I love to play with “snow” inside using all of our snowman match-up activities and to study the science behind snow with this science unit. We can practice CVC words with this free snowball activity and our rhyming words with these puzzles. 

I’ve found the best way to keep my students engaged and interested in their learning is through centers. And these Kindergarten math and literacy center activities for January help me do just that! Your students will be having ‘snow’ much fun, they won’t even realize they’re learning!

January Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

These January centers come with 20 kindergarten math activities and 20 kindergarten literacy centers. All of the centers are themed for January and winter. Using the January Kindergarten Centers

These Kindergarten math and literacy center activities for winter can be intimidating at first glance. With 40 centers for the month, there is a lot to look at! Here are some suggestions that can help make things easier for you: 

• After purchasing the centers, we suggest prepping and planning out the January centers for kindergarten the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for kindergarten, you have hundreds (yes, 480!) of centers and it can feel overwhelming. But take it one month at a time and once you go through a full year of them, you’ll have so much saved, stored, and prepped for next year that your future self will thank you!
• Look through the centers and make a list of which ones you want to use and what you need for each center. Print the centers and separate the materials into piles of what needs copying, laminating, cutting, etc. Get that done as you can, whenever you have time.
• When thinking about using the centers in class, you can give your students all of the options for the entire month, or you can break it down into one of each type of center per week. Maybe you’ll choose to set up a center for each activity, like one for dice games, one for partner games, etc. Or maybe you have math and literacy centers at the same time, so you can pick and choose which centers to use and where and when to use them, and then switch out when you see fit.
• We suggest introducing the directions ahead of time and modeling using the centers for your students. It is important to set clear expectations for each type of center. I like to do one quick whole-group explanation and demonstration for each center. If I feel like there may be a lot of questions, I’ll have the class do the activity as a whole group so that I can observe and answer any questions.
• There is no single “right way” to use these January center ideas for kindergarten! No matter what, these centers will keep your students learning and having fun throughout the long month of January.

Kindergarten Literacy Centers for January

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups

These pocket chart and match-up centers were designed to be used in a pocket chart center, where students can move around the pieces, or on the floor or a table – basically wherever students can spread out the different pieces. Your kindergarten students can practice sorting words that begin with “L” blends, sorting upper and lowercase letters, putting together sentences, onset and rime, and sight words this January with these centers.

Poetry

It can be difficult to find engaging, age-appropriate poems for our kindergarteners! These centers come with 4 different poems, 2 monthly themed poems and 2 nursery rhymes, that will have your students enjoying poetry this winter. Dice Games

Dice games are just the best. They take little-to-no prep, they’re easy to set up, and the students love rolling the dice! Some of the games, like the color by sum, come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a regular ol’ die. Students can practice adding, graphing, 3D Shapes, and other math skills with these math dice games.

Winter Themed Match-Ups and Puzzles

Match-ups and puzzles are easy to prep and easy to use. Make our match-up activities work for you! Use them in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor. Laminate them to use repeatedly throughout the years. Your students will love practicing 2D shapes, number ID, subitizing, and subtraction with these math activities.

Partner Games

Do your students LOVE when they get to play or work in pairs? Mine sure do. Your students can work together to play a card game, a “Catch the Penguin” board game, a race to the top game, and a spin and cover game. Your students won’t even realize that they are practicing ten frames, adding and subtracting, counting to 20, and 3D shapes while playing these games.

January Write and Wipe

Write and wipe games can be laminated or placed in a page protector to be used repeatedly each year. My students love getting to use the dry-erase markers and erasers. With these January math write-and-wipe centers, your kindergarten students can practice place value, shape attributes, counting on, and comparing numerals. 

Winter Themed Write the Room for Kindergarten

Your students can get out of their seats and move around with these math write the room centers! This time of year, there are so many November themes for elementary classrooms to work with, like the season of fall, Election Day, Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving.

We read books like this Veteran’s Day emergent reader to teach our students the significance of November 11th, and not long after that, we dive right into our turkey books! I love to read all of the stories on this Thanksgiving book list – they are always a hit! To bring in some literacy we work on these turkey initial sounds and digraph match-ups.

Using the First Grade Math and Literacy Centers for November

These Thanksgiving math and literacy centers for elementary can look like A LOT at first glance. I mean, you get 40 centers, and that is a TON! But here are some suggestions that can make things easier for you:

• After purchasing this resource, prep and plan out the centers the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for first grade, you’ll have SO many centers that you won’t know what to do with them all. Take it a month at a time!

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
These first grade centers were designed to be used in a pocket chart where students can move around the pieces, but they can also be done on the floor or a table. Students can practice sequencing the steps of cooking a turkey, putting together sentences, identifying trigraphs, and reading high-frequency words.

Poetry
It can be tricky to find good, age-appropriate poetry to read with our young learners. These November poems for first grade come with 4 poems in total, 3 monthly poems and 1 nursery rhyme, that will help your students fall in love with the patterns and rhymes of poetry. These first grade fall poems are fun for a poetry center but are also perfect for a whole class lesson this November. Write and Wipe and Puzzles

I love the writing center in my classroom! Seeing what my students come up with to write or draw about, I love being able to switch up the materials I provide them to use. Or introduce them all at the beginning of the month and see what they create! This month, your students will love writing about Thanksgiving Food words, Family and Friends words, Then and Now words, and Woodland Animal words. First Grade Math Centers for November

Dice Games
These dice games make the easiest, little-to-no prep math center. The centers include a Color by Code activity, a Roll and Cover game, a Roll and Graph game, and a Build a Turkey activity. Some of the games like the roll and graph come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a regular ol’ die! The roll and cover game can be printed and laminated to use over and over, or use the roll and “color” option instead for each child to complete! Students can practice graphing, addition to 12, and numbers to 10 using these first grade math games with dice.

Match-Ups and Puzzles
Make our match-up activities work for you! Use them in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor – whatever suits your needs. These match-ups and puzzles can be used again and again if you choose to laminate them. Your students will love practicing place value, subtraction, addition, and telling time to the half-hour with these November math activities.

Partner Games
These partner games are easy to set up and can be played in pairs. I don’t know about you, but my students LOVE when they get to play/work in pairs. Your students can work together to play a “Race to 10” game, a matching card game, a “Spin, Add, and Cover” game, or a “Turkey Spin and Race” board game. They will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize they are practicing several math skills like fractions, place value, tens and ones, addition, and subtraction.

Write and Wipe
Write and wipe games are meant to be laminated or placed in a page protector to be used year after year. My students always love using the dry-erase markers. With these November math write-and-wipe centers, your first grade students can practice addition, money, doubles addition, and mixed addition and subtraction, all with only a marker and eraser!

Write the Room
Get your students up and moving with these interactive write-the-room centers this November! Covering skills like 3D shape attributes, addition, place value, and subtraction, your students will love exploring the room while practicing their math. They are also great for your older students to use as a starting point when collecting facts and information about turkeys.

After learning about turkeys, have students complete this Turkeys Can, Have, Are activity by identifying what turkeys can do, what turkeys have, and what turkeys are. This can be done as a whole group activity, as individual work, or a mix of both.

Getting Mother’s Day Flower Gift Ready

I love when activities involve little or no prep and this one totally fits the bill! Literally, all that you will need to do is press “print”. How awesome is that?!

Everything is ready to go – all that is left is having your students put together these sweet gifts for their moms!

Using Mother’s Day Flower Gift in the Classroom

This activity is something that can easily be done in one sitting or can be spread out throughout the week. There are three different pages that will need to be completed in order to have a finished gift. First students will need to color the mom flower.

Next, you will want them to decorate the flower pot. I always recommend that my students draw a picture of them with their mom or even a fun memory of the two of them so that way there is something special on there.

Students will then write all of the special reasons why they love their mom. Each petal will get a different reason.

After everything has been colored, students will cut out all three pieces. When cutting the mom flower, you will want them to cut the lines in between each petal until they reach the inside circle. This way they can easily lift the petal and see what is written below once it is finished.

Lastly, students will glue all of the pieces together to get their finished product. To my the flower more stable, you can glue (or tape) a pipe cleaner to the back of the stem and flower. This will give the flower so extra support.

Sunflower Addition and Subtraction Printable covers numbers 1-20. Each number will have five pieces all together. There will be the sunflower number cover and then each number will have two addition problems cards and two subtraction problems cards.

Getting Sunflower Addition and Subtraction Printable Ready

This free printable is very easy to prep. I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating so it can easily be used year after year. These are quick and easy to cut. Simply use a paper cuter and you will be done in no time!

Doing Sunflower Addition and Subtraction Printable Activity

Students will start the activity by placing all of the pieces on the floor or table.

They will choose a sunflower number card. I always encourage my students to say the number out loud. This student chose a number two.

Students will then sort through all white circles looking for addition and subtraction problems that equal the given number.

Once the flower has all six circles representing the corresponding number, they can pick a new number and start again.

Another way this could be completed, is to have all of the sunflowers laid out on a table or even the floor. Students will then sort through all of the addition and subtraction problems and sort according to their answer.

If you have younger (or struggling) students that would be overwhelmed by the number of puzzle pieces in this activity, scale it back. Provide them with only the addition problems or maybe even one addition problem and one subtraction problem. Once they master those, you can slowly add in more.

For young students, you can easily adapt the sunflower number cards into a counting activity. My daughter had a blast counting sunflower seeds and placing it on the cards.

We love to experiment with different ways to paint, and stamping and printing with foil is a fun one we have tried recently.  Make a stamp out of foil, and then use paint to print with it. The texture this creates works really well to make the moon’s crater-filled landscape.

Materials Needed for the Foil-Printed Moon Craft:

• foil
• measuring cup (or other small cup)
• white paper
• something round to trace
• marker
• black paper
• gray paint
• optional: white and black paint
• scissors
• glue

Getting the Moon Craft ready:

To get this craft ready, I first created the foil “stamps”.

Do to this, press the foil into the measuring cup.  Push the foil into the bottom of the cup, until it forms a round bottom.  I also molded the top a bit to make a little handle.

Use a plate or lid to trace a circle onto a white piece of paper.

I put gray and white paint onto a plate for the kids to dip their stamps into. This craft works well with just gray paint, but we decided to add white for more dimension.

Doing the Foil-Printed Moon:

First, dip the bottom of the foil stamp into the gray paint.

If using white paint, dip some of the stamp into the white paint as well.

Stamp the paint onto the circle shape to make the moon.

At this point, my son decided that we needed to add some black paint for more craters. You can stop there, or add in some black paint and continue stamping.

When you’re finished stamping, put the moon aside to dry.

Meanwhile, make the background by making gray or white dots onto a a black piece of paper.

After all of the paint dries, cut the moon out and glue it to the black paper.

Now you have your moon in space!

I think it looks really neat with all of the texture and looks a lot like the craters on the real moon.

Getting Rain in a Jar Ready

Setting up this rain in a jar science experiment is very quick and easy. We gathered the following supplies:

• Mason jar full of water
• Shaving cream
• Food coloring
• Plastic pipettes
• Extra water
• Printable worksheet (available below)

I told my kids that we were going to make it rain inside the house. They were so excited!

I sprayed a fluffy layer of shaving cream on top of the water in the jar. It looked just like a soft cloud! My daughter then dropped a few drops of food coloring onto the shaving cream.

I explained that clouds are made of tiny water droplets. When the droplets get big and heavy enough they fall to the earth. If the temperature is above freezing the droplets will fall as rain. If it is colder than freezing they will fall as snow.

We took a few minutes to fill in the first part of her worksheet and to draw a “before” picture. We were ready to make it rain!

Rain in a Jar

I showed my daughter how to fill up a pipette with water. Then we worked together to squirt water onto our shaving cream cloud, making it heavier.

I made sure to have some paper towels on hand since sometimes the water and shaving cream came dripping down the outside of the jar.

We watched as the shaving cream got more and more saturated with water. After a couple of minutes we noticed that the colors were coming down into the water in the jar. It was raining!

Once it started to rain it just kept on going. We even added a little extra food coloring, just for fun.

The Science Behind Rain in a Jar

Clouds are formed when water in the air condenses onto tiny particles of dust. Millions of these droplets group together to form a visible cloud.

However, when those droplets get big and heavy they fall to the ground as rain.

Making a rain cloud in a jar is a simplistic model of how rain is actually formed, but it’s still a valuable hands-on experiment for visual learners. Plus, it’s so much fun they’ll want to do it again and again!

Each Patriotic Roll and Dab will come with three different levels for students. I love this because you can use it for a variety of ages or learning abilities. A three year old can do it with a kindergarten sibling or a struggling kindergarten student can do the same activity as an above average kindergarten student. Level one will require students to roll one dice at at time and simply dab that corresponding number on the mat.

The next level will require students to roll two dice. They will add the numbers together and then dab the sum(answer) on the mat.

Level three requires the students to roll three dice. They will add the three numbers together and then dab the sum.

You can either have your students complete this activity alone or in pairs. If they complete the activity in pairs, make sure they each get a different color. They will take turns rolling the dice and dabbing the number or sum. Once the board is full or time is called, the person that has the most dabs wins.

My daughter, Molly, is all about paint dabbers these days. They are pretty inexpensive and do not make a huge mess, like paint would. I bought a variety pack much like the one linked above. If you do not want to use paint dabbers, you can have your students (or child) use markers, crayons, or even paint.
