After Thanksgiving, staff and students are 100% aware that all we have to do is make it a few more weeks until a nice long holiday break. But somehow, those “few more weeks” are the busiest, longest weeks ever. They’re filled with assessments, conferences, planning, prepping for January…the list goes on and on. 

So, since we already know December will be rough, we do our best to plan easy and fun activities that will keep our students learning and engaged. I love using match-up activities in my centers or as morning work like this editable sight word activity and this Christmas tree number match-up. We keep the little ones busy with exciting wintertime science experiments like these salt crystal ornaments and hot chocolate experiment. As we enjoy our hot chocolate, we read our collection of Christmas books.

Using the December Kindergarten Math and Literacy Centers

Once you purchase and download your centers, look through all 40 files to see what you now own! Make a list of things to print, cut, copy, laminate, etc. Trust me, the more you prep to make them last, the easier the prep will be for years to come. If you print on cardstock and laminate the center materials this year, next year you’ll have a lot less to do.

When you introduce the centers to your students, either all at once, in chunks, or one week at a time, make sure to set explicit expectations for how you want the centers to be used. Model each activity and help your students with them the first few times. This will enable your students to be a lot more independent as the month goes on!

There is no one “right” way to use these centers. You can use them in your stations, as whole group activities, as sub plans, etc. Make them work for you. Once you take a look at all of the centers, you may even find that some of them fit perfectly with your kindergarten winter thematic units, so you may split them up to be done at different times during the season.

During this time of year it’s dark when you leave for school and dark when you head back home. Depending on where you live, you might have to dress in 7+ layers just to keep yourself warm on the drive to school. Your students come in with their coats, snow pants, and boots and everything is wet, muddy, and messy. And worst of all… So. Much. Indoor. Recess. 

Maybe it’s too cold, too icy, too wet… whatever the reason, there seems to be an uptick in indoor recess time during the winter months. And that can cause you to lose your mind and your students to go stir crazy. Our kids thrive off that chance to breathe in the fresh air during outdoor recess and run off some of their pent up energy. 

Now I don’t have any magical solutions for getting your students fresh air during indoor recess besides opening the windows, but I do have some fantastically fun indoor winter brain breaks for the classroom when everyone needs a break from learning! 

Brain Breaks for Winter

Winter brain breaks are an excellent way to maintain on-task behavior in your classroom throughout the colder season. Not only do they help increase learning and engagement in students, but they can also encourage creativity and teamwork amongst your class. We’ve collected a range of activities to bring movement into the classroom during the winter – all while having a blast.

Indoor “Snowball” Fight

I love to use this Editable Snowball Fight printable throughout the winter months. You can put letters, numbers, sight words, equations, or any other skill that you’re wanting your students to review on the snowballs. Your students will have a blast throwing and picking up the “snowballs” and you’ll love that no one is getting hurt or wet while playing! This game is always a hit so be prepared for the kids to request it over and over again.

Winter STEM Activities

Some of my other favorite brain breaks to do with kids during the winter are these Winter STEM Activities. I always like to have one prepped in a center or in bins so that when everyone is needing a break from their learning, we can get up and complete a STEM challenge as a class or in small groups. Your students will still be learning through exploration, but they’ll get a much-needed break from their seats and their written work! This Avalanche Experiment is an easy prep STEM activity our kids find absolutely fascinating.

Write the Room Activities

Everyone loves a good task, right? Our students (and even us) typically thrive when given just the right amount of structure and direction. Sometimes you can just say “everyone get up and move around for a few minutes” and it will go really well. The kids will stretch and return to their seats when asked. But other times, if I tell them they can get up and move around for a few minutes, we’ll end up with a game of tag, outdoor voices, and usually some tears from people crashing into each other or tripping. 

This is why I love using write the room activities as indoor brain breaks. Your students can still move around the room relatively freely, but they are tasked with an activity to keep them focused. While this isn’t a complete “brain break” since they’re still thinking and learning, it definitely counts as a movement break and anything helps during the winter!

Indoor Fun with BINGO Games

During the winter, I am always looking for fun, creative indoor brain breaks for kids, and I love to use easy activities that I can store away and use year after year. That’s why I always have a game of bingo prepped for every season and holiday. This Winter Bingo game is one of my favorites on my list of cold-weather indoor recess ideas! I always suggest grabbing both the Seasons Bingo and Holiday Bingo bundles because you’ll never be without an easy brain break for your students!

Video Brain Breaks for Winter

Sometimes we want to run an activity or structured brain break, and sometimes we just want our students to get out of their seats for a few minutes! These videos make for the perfect winter brain breaks to get moving and burn energy. 

Your students will be laughing and dancing along with the Koo Koo Kangaroo clan with this fun “Brr” song and dance. 

We can always count on The Learning Station for simple-to-follow, age-appropriate movement breaks, and this Snowman freeze song is no different!

I love Jack Hartmann videos for my kindergarteners, don’t you? He has a video for everything! Play this Make any Shape and Freeze! game this winter when you need to get your students out of their seats.

Lastly, one of my students’ FAVORITE things to do in the classroom is yoga. I find that the Cosmic Kids Yoga channel on YouTube has the best and highest quality yoga videos for our students. Some exciting winter brain break options include JoyBob the Polar Bear Yoga and Pedro the Penguin Yoga.

After discussing so many holidays during the months of November and December, I use January as a month to focus on snow and everything that has to do with winter! And you can’t think about January without exploring all about Penguins. We bring crafting and language arts together with this Penguin Puffy Paint Craft and Writing Prompt.

You can find my classroom covered in snowmen, snowballs, polar bears, penguins, icicles, hot cocoa, and lots of other wintery decor. I love teaching my students the science behind snow with this science unit and making sure our classroom is decorated with these plastic icicles. And to keep the fun and games going we play winter bingo and discuss all the things we enjoy about these colder months.

And since January in the classroom happens to come after a long holiday break, I always spend time reteaching skills, giving the kids a lot of practice and review. These first grade math and literacy centers with a January theme are perfect for that!

Using these First Grade Winter Activities

• Stay ahead! Prep these centers ahead of January and plan out what you are going to use so that you can laminate, copy, and cut everything that needs to be done. Pocket Chart and Match-Ups

Using the January Math and Literacy Centers 

These January winter-themed activities and centers for pre-k is a large product. Once purchased, you’ll receive 40 pre-k winter centers; it’s a lot! So we have collected some suggestions and ideas to help make things easier for you. 

• My favorite thing to do with these centers is to prep and plan out which ones I am going to use the month before. Especially if you have our year-long bundle of pre-k centers, it is much easier to look at one month at a time and stay ahead of the game. Each year you use them it gets easier and easier, since you’ll be able to reuse what you’ve already prepped. 
• After looking through the month’s worth of centers, print the ones you want to use and decide what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. and plan out when you’ll have time to do these tasks. 
• These centers are designed to be used throughout the month, but you can decide if you want to give students one of each center for each week of the month, or if you want to introduce all of the centers at the beginning of the month and use them for the entirety of the month. It’s up to you, there is not one right way to use the centers! 
• I like to introduce the new centers each week and model them for my students. I always try to set clear, simple expectations for each type of center.

Pre-K Winter Literacy Centers

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups

Pocket charts and match-up activities can be used in a hanging pocket chart, or anywhere that students can spread out the parts and pieces, like on the floor or a table. With these January pre-k literacy centers, students can practice identifying letters vs. words, rhyming words, uppercase and lowercase letters, and beginning sound. 

Poetry

Do you struggle to find appropriate poems to use with your young learners? I sure do. That’s why I am obsessed with the 4 poems included each month with these centers. With two nursery rhymes and two winter poems, students can practice reading, retelling, and other language skills with these poetry centers.

Write & Wipe and Puzzles 

Write and wipe centers and puzzles are great activities to laminate and reuse year after year. Throughout December we stayed busy with this festive gingerbread rhyming activity and these Christmas number mats. We incorporated Christmas STEM ideas all month long to keep everyone’s excitement focused on learning. We even made reindeer bags to take everything home over our long holiday break. 

But now that the holiday season has passed, and with no long breaks or vacations on the horizon, January can feel daunting for both teachers and students. So let’s start planning January activities and games for the classroom to keep our students engaged and interested in their learning! 

January Classroom Activities and Ideas

January-Themed Centers

Of course my number one must-have to make planning easier is our January Math and Literacy Centers. Fun Winter Games

January Classroom Crafts

Check out this Penguin Puffy Paint craft and writing activity. It is seriously the cutest! Or add this Polar Bear craft to your studies to make an adorable winter bulletin board. Made from paper plates, this is one of my favorite winter classroom crafts! 

January Science Activities

Winter is a wonderful time for science! I love doing science units and experiments that get my kids excited about their learning. These four January Science Experiments will have your students exploring and experimenting all month long. I mean, how fun does “Polar Bear Blubber,” “Blizzard in a Jar,” “Hot Cocoa Science,” and “Melting Snowman” sound? These experiments are also perfect for doing at home with your own kids. Most of the supplies needed are things you probably already have at home!

While you’re filling the classroom up with (fake) snowmen and snowballs, make sure to teach your students the science behind snow with this Snow Science Unit. If you have snow in your area, this unit is excellent for discussing the dangers of snow and how to stay safe in the snow. And if you don’t have snow in your area, students will still love learning about the life cycle of snow and can look forward to seeing it for themselves some day! 

With January being so long, you might get tired of talking about snow, snowmen, and snowballs. Switch it up with some winter animal studies! Our Penguin Animal Study is a great addition to your January science plans. 

Another fun animal to study this winter is the polar bear. Our Polar Bear Animal Study will give you a week’s worth of lesson plans and activities to teach your littlest learners all about these big, furry bears! 

Literacy Classroom Activities for Winter

And with January comes snow! Well…for some of us. For those of us down south, we prepare fun snow classroom activities to make up for the lack of snow outside. These snowman rhyming puzzles are a great addition to your literacy centers this winter. 

Our Snowman Match-Ups are such a fun way to practice sounds, blends, digraphs, numbers, and more, all while building adorable snowmen.

This Penguin Emergent Reader can be added to your reading center or used in small groups. Your students will love learning about these waddling creatures. 

After reading about penguins, include this Penguin Syllable Sort activity to your literacy or rug center to help your students practice identifying and counting syllables with some cute penguin friends!

It’s important we keep our students engaged and excited during this tedious month. Using these January learning activities and winter centers, we can make this long month fun! 

I love to play with “snow” inside using all of our snowman match-up activities and to study the science behind snow with this science unit. We can practice CVC words with this free snowball activity and our rhyming words with these puzzles. 

I’ve found the best way to keep my students engaged and interested in their learning is through centers. And these Kindergarten math and literacy center activities for January help me do just that! Your students will be having ‘snow’ much fun, they won’t even realize they’re learning!

January Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

Using the January Kindergarten Centers

These Kindergarten math and literacy center activities for winter can be intimidating at first glance. With 40 centers for the month, there is a lot to look at! Here are some suggestions that can help make things easier for you: 

• After purchasing the centers, we suggest prepping and planning out the January centers for kindergarten the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for kindergarten, you have hundreds (yes, 480!) of centers and it can feel overwhelming. But take it one month at a time and once you go through a full year of them, you’ll have so much saved, stored, and prepped for next year that your future self will thank you!
• Look through the centers and make a list of which ones you want to use and what you need for each center. Print the centers and separate the materials into piles of what needs copying, laminating, cutting, etc. Get that done as you can, whenever you have time.
• When thinking about using the centers in class, you can give your students all of the options for the entire month, or you can break it down into one of each type of center per week. Maybe you’ll choose to set up a center for each activity, like one for dice games, one for partner games, etc. Or maybe you have math and literacy centers at the same time, so you can pick and choose which centers to use and where and when to use them, and then switch out when you see fit.
• We suggest introducing the directions ahead of time and modeling using the centers for your students. It is important to set clear expectations for each type of center. I like to do one quick whole-group explanation and demonstration for each center. If I feel like there may be a lot of questions, I’ll have the class do the activity as a whole group so that I can observe and answer any questions.
• There is no single “right way” to use these January center ideas for kindergarten! No matter what, these centers will keep your students learning and having fun throughout the long month of January.

Kindergarten Literacy Centers for January

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups

These pocket chart and match-up centers were designed to be used in a pocket chart center, where students can move around the pieces, or on the floor or a table – basically wherever students can spread out the different pieces. Your kindergarten students can practice sorting words that begin with “L” blends, sorting upper and lowercase letters, putting together sentences, onset and rime, and sight words this January with these centers.

Poetry

It can be difficult to find engaging, age-appropriate poems for our kindergarteners! These centers come with 4 different poems, 2 monthly themed poems and 2 nursery rhymes, that will have your students enjoying poetry this winter. Or introduce them all at the beginning of the month and see what they come up with! This month, your students will love writing with Winter words, Winter Clothes words, Arctic Animal words, and Chinese New Year words. I love to put the cards on rings so that they stay together, but a pocket chart or basket work great too.

Dice Games

Dice games are just the best. They take little-to-no prep, they’re easy to set up, and the students love rolling the dice! Some of the games, like the color by sum, come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a regular ol’ die. Students can practice adding, graphing, 3D Shapes, and other math skills with these math dice games.

Winter Themed Match-Ups and Puzzles

Match-ups and puzzles are easy to prep and easy to use. Make our match-up activities work for you! Use them in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor. Laminate them to use repeatedly throughout the years. Your students will love practicing 2D shapes, number ID, subitizing, and subtraction with these math activities.

Partner Games

Do your students LOVE when they get to play or work in pairs? Mine sure do. Your students can work together to play a card game, a “Catch the Penguin” board game, a race to the top game, and a spin and cover game. Your students won’t even realize that they are practicing ten frames, adding and subtracting, counting to 20, and 3D shapes while playing these games.

January Write and Wipe

Write and wipe games can be laminated or placed in a page protector to be used repeatedly each year. My students love getting to use the dry-erase markers and erasers. With these January math write-and-wipe centers, your kindergarten students can practice place value, shape attributes, counting on, and comparing numerals. 

Winter Themed Write the Room for Kindergarten

Your students can get out of their seats and move around with these math write the room centers! Nonfiction Reindeer Emergent Reader

After introducing reindeer to your students with the Reindeer Facts PowerPoint and Posters, use this emergent reader to help students identify the most important facts about reindeer. Filled with real-life pictures, this emergent reader can be used in whole-group or small-group settings and is perfect to place in your reading center for students to explore on their own. Kids love taking their emergent readers home to read to their families too.

Help students discover the different parts of a reindeer with these posters and worksheets. Reindeer Craft

With simple directions and materials, students will love making this reindeer craft to go along with these Christmas science activities! Tracing hands and feet makes for excellent fine-motor practice, and the finished product of these crafts is perfect for a bulletin board or to send home as a cute keepsake or decoration. 

Reindeer STEM Centers

After learning about reindeer all week, give students a chance to explore and create on their own with these reindeer STEM challenges. Students can try to camouflage their reindeer using materials you probably already have in the classroom or at home. 

Definition Posters

We want our students to gain an understanding of the different vocabulary words that they’ll be hearing throughout the unit when we introduce a new topic, which is why I love these definition posters! Use these definition posters to teach students the simplified definitions of words related to reindeer that you’ll be referring to during the week. With real-life photos, these posters are one of the first things added to my “print, laminate, and save” pile! 

Word Wall Cards

Display the words that you’ll be using while discussing reindeer in different places around the classroom. These word wall cards can be hung up on the board, put in a pocket chart, or put on a ring to allow students to review and familiarize themselves with them.

Reindeer Facts or Animal Research Craft

This Reindeer Fact or Research Craft is perfect if you are looking for a project that has a little more work and depth to it. Use our provided template and directions to help students showcase all of the new reindeer information they’ve learned. If you have students that need even more of a challenge, you can use one of the reindeer facts or reindeer research options for students to add to their craft. Utilize the various options to fit the needs of your students.

I’m a Little Reindeer Emergent Reader

This fiction emergent reader is great to use as an “extra” activity. Your students will love coloring in the pictures and taking this reader home to read with their families. 

Reindeer and Reindeer Facts Circle Maps

Doing some writing? Or maybe just some brainstorming? Circle maps are a type of graphic organizer and can be used with drawings or words. I love to make one as a whole group at the start of the unit and then again at the end to see how much the kids have learned. They are also great for your older students to use as a starting point when collecting facts and information about reindeer.

Reindeer Can, Have, Are Activity 

Students can complete this Reindeer Can, Have, Are activity by identifying what reindeer can do, what they have, and what they are. This can be done as a whole group activity, as individual work, or a mix of both. With my littlest learners, I like to do this activity whole-group on the board after we introduce the animal. 

Writing Center Cards and Paper

After purchasing the unit, you’ll find writing materials to place in a center throughout the week-long unit or to even use as a whole group activity. You’ll receive horizontal and vertical papers with and without lines, plus writing cards in both lower and uppercase letters with pictures so that your young students can identify the words. This is a great way to spark creativity and practice vocabulary and I love to see the drawings and stories (verbal or written) that the students come up with! There are so many different ways to use and incorporate these writing materials into your classroom. With reindeer writing papers and writing cards, you’re sure to get endless magical and festive stories told by your young students.

Reindeer Bingo Game

Want something fun to do leading up to the holiday break? This Reindeer Bingo game is perfect for that! The bingo boards and cards come in color and black & white. I love using bingo as a fun Friday activity, during my holiday parties, or just because! Bingo is also easy to have a parent volunteer come in and run. I love to use counters as the pieces to cover up the pictures on the bingo cards, but many people use paper or anything else they have on hand.

Instead of just talking about penguins we find ways to bring them into our lessons! We love reading our library full of Penguin Books and students talk about their favorite penguin from Madagascar!

So to help our little learners get excited about learning to read we make a connection between these adorable Antarctica birds and language arts.

Learning and practicing our syllables is so much fun with our Penguin Syllable Sort game! And we begin to distinguish our beginning sounds with our Initial Sound Penguin Puzzles.

As our students are at the earliest stages of starting to read we use strategies to help them to develop into confident readers.

Using the Penguin Emergent Reader

This Penguin Emergent Reader introduces students to basic facts about penguins. Each page contains one to two sentences with real photographs.

You can print this emergent reader in black and white to save ink. I recommend printing a color version for your classroom library that can be used year after year then a black and white copy for each of your students.

If you print these in black and white, you can have your students color their Penguin Emergent Reader prior to reading. When they are able to color their books, it not only introduces them to the material but helps them to feel they have created their own book.
