As we begin the month, we count down to the 14th with first grade Valentine’s math activities like this skip counting match-up. It’s so easy to incorporate hearts and love-themed materials all month long!

And, of course on Valentine’s Day, we play this Valentine’s Day bingo during our class party. I love to get the little candy hearts from the store for them to use as markers. 

Since February is just past the halfway point of the school year, it’s so important that my students continue to review their math and literacy skills that they’ve worked hard to learn all year. That’s why I always fit in a page from this February literacy journal and this math journal each school day during the month.

Using the February First Grade Centers

Once you purchase and download the First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers, it’s time to explore! You can look through all of the different categories to see the centers that you now own. I always suggest starting by making a list of which ones you like and for what purpose, that way you can add them to your lesson plans easily.

Before printing, make sure to check out the whole file of each center. All of them come with both color and black & white options, and many come with differentiation options as well. Once you decide what you want to use, send to the printer. If possible, print on cardstock or other heavy paper for things you want to laminate and reuse.

Once a hard copy is printed, I like to use Post-it notes to write down how many copies of each thing I need. Then once I make copies, I can get to laminating and cutting. It’s a lot of prep work, but the more I laminate now, the less I have to prep next February! 

Once everything is ready, decide how you’ll introduce the centers to your first graders. Some teachers choose to model one a day, while others do batches all at once. Most importantly, make sure to set clear expectations for each type of center to help your students be as independent as possible while working and playing.

Literacy Centers for February

Writing Centers

The literacy centers come with four themed sets of writing cards. These cards will fit in with the rest of your creative writing activities for first grade in February. Using the End-of-Year 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers

The 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers for June come with 40 centers to use with your students, which is a lot. We know that you’re super busy already and don’t have any time to waste, so we thought we’d offer our favorite tips and tricks for using these centers. 

• Once you purchase and download the centers, look at everything that comes inside the zip file, especially the directions. Make a list of centers that you’ll definitely be using and any other thoughts or notes that come to mind at first glance.
• Make a plan to prep the centers. Figure out what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut. We highly suggest laminating as much as possible to make prep easier for the following year since a lot of materials can be reusable. 
• Once you know the centers that you’ll be using, make a plan to roll them out to your students. If you have our other months of centers, your students will already be familiar with the format. All you’ll have to do is show them the new centers and remind them of the directions! If this is your first month using our centers, make sure to explicitly model and teach each type of center so that when you give them to your students, they can work as independently as possible. 
• Remember that there is no right way to use these centers. You can use some of the activities as whole-class work or even in small groups. Make the centers work for you!
• Don’t be afraid to differentiate as needed! Make the puzzles self-checking, use the different recording sheets for the write the room activities, etc. As much as we try to make the centers as well-rounded as possible to meet the needs of first grade teachers around the world, we know that every class of students is different and you may need to modify for your students to thrive.
• Don’t forget to think ahead to next June! Print things that can be reused like the write and wipe activities, roll and cover game, writing cards, pocket charts and match ups, etc. on cardstock and laminate for future use.

Dice Games

I love to use games with dice to engage my students because of how easy and fun they are. Rolling dice keeps their little hands busy and the materials are simple and easy to prep. The four June dice games include a “Build a Bug” activity, a “Color by Code” worksheet, a “Roll and Cover/Color” activity, and a “Roll and Graph” center. These first grade June math centers will help your students practice adding, subtracting, and identifying coins. 

Partner Games

My students are always begging me for activities that allow them to work with their classmates. Using the June Kindergarten Centers

Look, I get it, 40 centers is a lot to work with. You are already stressed out, overworked, tired, and have way too many things on your to-do list. But trust me, these June kindergarten learning centers are worth the work. Plus, once you prep them for this year, next year will be a whole lot easier. 

To start, after you purchase and download the centers, make sure you look through everything you have at your disposal. Some teachers like to make a list of the skills and centers and which ones they definitely want to use. These end-of-year centers can be used in centers or stations, or even as whole-group or small-group activities. 

After you decide which centers you want to use and for what, start printing or make a list of what needs to be printed. Using the May Centers

This collection of spring math and literacy activities for first grade comes with 40 centers to use with your students this May. Forty centers might sound overwhelming at first, so let me share some of our favorite tips for using these spring educational resources with your students. 

• After you purchase and download the centers, take inventory on what you have. Look at the different types of centers and the various centers of each type. Make a list, if not printing right away, of which centers you want to print out. 
• Make a plan of what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut. Figure out which centers can be made reusable so that they don’t need to be prepped again every year.
• Decide how you’ll use and introduce the centers. Maybe you will show students one version of each type of center a week. Or maybe you’ll decide to use some centers as other types of activities. Remember, there is no “right” way to use these, make the first grade May learning centers work for you!
• Remember to model each center for your students and to set clear and concise expectations for what you expect from them during center time. These activities are repetitive and your students will become more independent after doing them a few times.

Write the room activities are a fun way to get your first graders out of their seats and moving while learning this spring. With four different activities, all with differentiated recording sheets, your students can practice addition, word problems, subtraction, and number order with these May math centers for first grade.

Write and wipe centers can be laminated or put in page protectors and used with dry-erase markers over and over again. These four May math activities will help students practice several important math skills, including comparing numerals using the correct symbols, counting nickels, pennies, dimes, and quarters, skip counting by 5, 10s, and 2s, and telling time to the hour and half hour.

Puzzles and match-ups are easy centers to pull out when you need something quick and simple for your students to do. This type of center is also good for early finisher work. Most years, April brings Easter, although sometimes it sneaks in at the end of March. We celebrate Easter with these engaging read alouds and this fun bingo game. We study plants with our Plants Science Unit and learn about the life cycle of a flower with this craftivity. 

Later on in April, we celebrate Earth Day and discuss the importance of taking care of the earth with this emergent reader. We can even help our first graders practice telling time with these spring time puzzles.

Using these April Centers for First Grade

With 40 springtime centers to use with your first grade students, it can understandably be overwhelming to decide how to set them up and use them in your classroom. Here are some tips for you to check out after you purchase the centers.

• Plan ahead! Do you have the full year of our first grade centers? Prep the centers during the previous month so that you can decide what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut before you need to use them. 
• The first time you use the centers, it will probably be a lot of work, but printing on cardstock and/or laminating can help you keep many of the pieces for the following year. Pro tip: before storing the centers away, make a class set of all the black and white consumables, like the recording sheets, and store them away with the other materials. Your future self will thank you!  
• Pick and choose what centers you’ll want to use with your students during the month. Will you model all of the activities at the beginning of the month? Or will you do it one week at a time? There is no right answer, do what’s best for you!
• Set clear and understandable expectations for each type of center. I like to model each activity explicitly before I let my students anywhere near the materials. After they do each center a few times, they’ll be accustomed to the format and the need for help from you will be a lot less!

April Literacy Centers and Activities for First Grade

Poetry
With three April poems and one nursery rhyme, your students will learn to enjoy poetry as much as we do! With age-appropriate language, students can practice rhyming, identifying patterns and parts of speech, and visualizing the poems. The Earth Day poem in this set of April poems is definitely one of my favorites!

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
The pocket chart writing activities for April include a “How to Grow a Plant” sequencing and writing activity and a springtime sentence scramble. The pocket chart match-ups include a sight word hide and seek game and a vowel team match-up for your first graders to play together.

After discussing so many holidays during the months of November and December, I use January as a month to focus on snow and everything that has to do with winter! And you can’t think about January without exploring all about Penguins. We bring crafting and language arts together with this Penguin Puffy Paint Craft and Writing Prompt.

You can find my classroom covered in snowmen, snowballs, polar bears, penguins, icicles, hot cocoa, and lots of other wintery decor. I love teaching my students the science behind snow with this science unit and making sure our classroom is decorated with these plastic icicles. And to keep the fun and games going we play winter bingo and discuss all the things we enjoy about these colder months.

Using these First Grade Winter Activities

With 40 of the best winter math and literacy centers kids will love, it is easy to get overwhelmed. But let me give you some suggestions to make using these first grade teaching resources easier for you:

• Stay ahead! Prep these centers ahead of January and plan out what you are going to use so that you can laminate, copy, and cut everything that needs to be done. January Literacy Centers for First Grade

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups

Your first grade students can work on adjectives, contractions, prepositions, sentences, and sequencing with these pocket chart and match-up activities. The activities are meant to be used in a pocket chart or wherever they can be spread out, so a table or the floor work just fine too.

This time of year, there are so many November themes for elementary classrooms to work with, like the season of fall, Election Day, Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving.

We read books like this Veteran’s Day emergent reader to teach our students the significance of November 11th, and not long after that, we dive right into our turkey books! I love to read all of the stories on this Thanksgiving book list – they are always a hit! To bring in some literacy we work on these turkey initial sounds and digraph match-ups.

Our November Math and Literacy Centers for First Grade are a great way to incorporate all of the fun November themes into first grade math and literacy lessons. With turkeys, leaves, and everything else in November, your students will love these fall activities for first grade.

Using the First Grade Math and Literacy Centers for November

These Thanksgiving math and literacy centers for elementary can look like A LOT at first glance. I mean, you get 40 centers, and that is a TON! But here are some suggestions that can make things easier for you:

• After purchasing this resource, prep and plan out the centers the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for first grade, you’ll have SO many centers that you won’t know what to do with them all. Take it a month at a time! 
• Look through the centers and print what you want to use. Separate into piles of what needs copying, laminating, cutting, etc. Tackle that as you can. 
• Depending on how you run your centers, you might want to give your students all of the options for the entire month, or you might want to break it down into 4(ish) weeks. You could have one center for dice games, one for partner games, etc. Or if you do math and literacy centers at the same time, you can pick and choose which ones to use and where and when to use them, rotating as you see fit.
• Introduce the directions ahead of time and model using the centers for your students. Set clear expectations for each type of center. 
• Most importantly, enjoy this resource and know that there is no one “right way” to use them! No matter what, with these centers, your students will be learning, laughing, and staying engaged all throughout the month of November.

First Grade Literacy Centers for November

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
These first grade centers were designed to be used in a pocket chart where students can move around the pieces, but they can also be done on the floor or a table. Students can practice sequencing the steps of cooking a turkey, putting together sentences, identifying trigraphs, and reading high-frequency words.

Poetry
It can be tricky to find good, age-appropriate poetry to read with our young learners. These November poems for first grade come with 4 poems in total, 3 monthly poems and 1 nursery rhyme, that will help your students fall in love with the patterns and rhymes of poetry. These first grade fall poems are fun for a poetry center but are also perfect for a whole class lesson this November. Use the poetry journal, notebook poems, and pocket chart poem activities to teach each poem and practice other language skills like parts of speech and comprehension.

Write and Wipe and Puzzles 
With two write-and-wipe activities and two puzzles, these centers are perfect for pulling out year after year. Write and wipe activities can be laminated to make them reusable, or can be placed into a page protector. Using a dry-erase marker, your first grade students can practice adjectives and conventions. While building the puzzles, they can work on reviewing the digraph “ck” and CVCe words.

Do you use Write the Room activities in your classroom? Students love to be able to get up and move around the classroom independently and I love that it’s an easy way to review skills. These November write-the-room centers cover skills like digraphs, unscrambling sentences, S blends, and vowel teams.

Writing
I love the writing center in my classroom! Seeing what my students come up with to write or draw about, I love being able to switch up the materials I provide them to use. With four different November writing card topics and many different writing page options, your first-grade students can have new words and topics to write about every week during November. Or introduce them all at the beginning of the month and see what they create! This month, your students will love writing about Thanksgiving Food words, Family and Friends words, Then and Now words, and Woodland Animal words. I put the cards on rings so that they stay together, but a pocket chart or basket work great too! 

First Grade Math Centers for November

Dice Games
These dice games make the easiest, little-to-no prep math center. The centers include a Color by Code activity, a Roll and Cover game, a Roll and Graph game, and a Build a Turkey activity. Some of the games like the roll and graph come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a regular ol’ die! The roll and cover game can be printed and laminated to use over and over, or use the roll and “color” option instead for each child to complete! Match-Ups and Puzzles
Make our match-up activities work for you! Use them in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor – whatever suits your needs. They will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize they are practicing several math skills like fractions, place value, tens and ones, addition, and subtraction.

Write and Wipe
Write and wipe games are meant to be laminated or placed in a page protector to be used year after year. My students always love using the dry-erase markers. At the beginning of the month, we might teach our young learners about Election Day with activities like this emergent reader. Next comes Veteran’s Day, where we can use this emergent reader to discuss the special day and this craft to celebrate. And then of course, we have Thanksgiving towards the end of the month, where we take time to be grateful for all that we have and to spend time with our loved ones. At Thanksgiving time, I love to do fun crafts like this handprint turkey craft and thankful turkey activity to help my young students identify the most important things in their lives.

As you can see, there are so many good November themes for kindergarten. I love to incorporate all of these themes into my centers so that my students feel like they’re celebrating all month long! Using the November Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

If you’re using the monthly math and literacy centers for the first time, it can seem a little daunting. I mean, 40 centers is A LOT of centers! Here are some suggestions to help you:

• After you purchase the November Math and Literacy Centers for Kindergarten, prep and plan out the centers the month before. If you own our year-long bundle of monthly math and literacy centers for kindergarten, you’ll have SO many centers that you won’t know what to do with them all. Take it a month at a time.

• Look through the centers and print what you want to use. Separate into piles of what needs copying, laminating, cutting, etc. Tackle that as you can. These laminating sheets work well and we love this laminator. We’ve used these dice or these foam ones for even more QUIET!

• Depending on how you organize your centers, you might want to give your students all of the options for the entire month, or you might want to break it down into four(ish) weeks. You could have one center for dice games, one for partner games, etc. Or if you do math and literacy centers at the same time, you can pick and choose which ones to use where and when and rotate as you see fit.
• Introduce the directions ahead of time and model using the centers for your students. Set clear expectations for each type of center.
• Most importantly: have fun! These centers are a surefire way to engage your students in learning, laughing, and having fun all throughout the month of November.

November Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
These activities are designed to be used in a pocket chart center, where students can move around the pieces, but this can also be done on the floor or a table. Students can practice sequencing the steps of cooking a turkey, putting together sentences, onset & rime, and reading high-frequency words.

Poetry
Are you always searching for good, age-appropriate poetry for your young students? I love these four poems (3 November poems and 1 nursery rhyme) because they help our students fall in love with the patterns and rhymes of poetry in a kid-friendly way. Use the poetry journal, notebook poems, and pocket chart poem activities to teach each poem and practice other language skills, like high-frequency words and comprehension.

Write & Wipe and Puzzles
With two write-and-wipe activities and two puzzles, these centers are perfect for laminating and pulling out year to year. Using a dry erase marker, students can practice their upper and lowercase letters, beginning sounds, and sight words. Plus, they can have fun building puzzles while reviewing onset & rime and rhyming words.

Write the Room
Write the room activities are some of my favorite activities for the kindergarten classroom! Students love being able to leave their desks and move around the classroom independently, and I love that it’s an easy way to review skills. These November write the room centers cover skills like nouns, segmenting cvc words, and identifying ending sounds.

Writing
It is so important to have an engaging writing center for your students to work independently or with classmates. With four different writing card topics and tons of different writing page options, your students can have new words and topics to write about every week during November. Or introduce them all at the beginning of the month and let them go wild! Either way, your students will love writing with Thanksgiving food words, family and friends words, then and now words, and woodland animal words this month! I love to put the cards on rings so that they stay together, but a pocket chart or basket works great too.

November Math Centers for Kindergarten

Dice Games
These games are exactly what they sound like, games to play with dice! How easy is that? These centers include a Color by Code activity, a Roll and Cover game, a Roll and Graph game, and a Build a Turkey activity. Some of the games, like the roll and graph, come with paper die to build and use. Others can be used with just a plain ol’ regular die! The roll and cover game can be printed and laminated to use over and over, or use the roll and “color” option instead for each child to complete.

Match-Ups and Puzzles
Match-up activities can be done in a pocket chart, on a table, or on the floor. Whatever works for you! These match-ups and puzzles are also great to laminate if you want to use them again. Your students will love practicing making numbers, sorting heavy and light objects, and identifying coins and 3D shapes with these November math centers.

Partner Games
We all need to play with friends sometime, right? These partner games are easy to set up and can be played in pairs. Your students can work together to play a Race to 10 game, a matching card game, a Spin, Add, and Cover game, and a Turkey Spin and Race board game. They will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize they are practicing several math skills like identifying number words, 3D shapes, and adding.

Getting Spring Teaching Time Clock Puzzles Ready

This free printable is very easy to prep. I recommend printing on cardstock and laminating so it can easily be used year after year. I typically use a paper cutter to cut out the entire puzzle and then go back and cut out the individual pieces with scissors.

Doing Spring Teaching Time Clock Puzzles

Students will start the activity by laying all of the pieces on the floor or table. It might be a good idea to have the students work in small groups the first time they try to complete the teaching time clock puzzles. They will then choose a clock puzzle piece. This student chose a puzzle piece with the word “the” on it.

Next your students will then search through the puzzle pieces looking for the clock puzzle piece that has the same time on it. Once it is found the puzzle will be complete.

Once the puzzle has both pictures, it is complete. They can continue until all puzzle pieces are done or time is up.
