As we begin the month, we count down to the 14th with first grade Valentine’s math activities like this skip counting match-up. It’s so easy to incorporate hearts and love-themed materials all month long!

And, of course on Valentine’s Day, we play this Valentine’s Day bingo during our class party. I love to get the little candy hearts from the store for them to use as markers. 

Since February is just past the halfway point of the school year, it’s so important that my students continue to review their math and literacy skills that they’ve worked hard to learn all year. That’s why I always fit in a page from this February literacy journal and this math journal each school day during the month. 

Another fantastic way to incorporate all of the holidays and themes into your students’ learning is to use these First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers. First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers

The February learning centers come with 40 centers for you to use with your students. You may think that 40 sounds like a lot, and it is! But you can split the centers up and even use some of them as whole group work, morning work, sub plans, etc. The options are endless when you have so much at your fingertips!

Using the February First Grade Centers

Once you purchase and download the First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers, it’s time to explore! You can look through all of the different categories to see the centers that you now own. I always suggest starting by making a list of which ones you like and for what purpose, that way you can add them to your lesson plans easily.

Before printing, make sure to check out the whole file of each center. All of them come with both color and black & white options, and many come with differentiation options as well. Once you decide what you want to use, send to the printer. If possible, print on cardstock or other heavy paper for things you want to laminate and reuse.

Once a hard copy is printed, I like to use Post-it notes to write down how many copies of each thing I need. Then once I make copies, I can get to laminating and cutting. It’s a lot of prep work, but the more I laminate now, the less I have to prep next February! 

Once everything is ready, decide how you’ll introduce the centers to your first graders. Some teachers choose to model one a day, while others do batches all at once. Most importantly, make sure to set clear expectations for each type of center to help your students be as independent as possible while working and playing.

Writing Centers

The literacy centers come with four themed sets of writing cards. These cards will fit in with the rest of your creative writing activities for first grade in February. Are you a Valentine’s Day fan or are you someone who thinks it’s just a made-up holiday to boost flower and greeting card sales? I, for one, LOVE Valentine’s Day because I love love, and I love celebrating, so why wouldn’t I love to celebrate love?!

Before we reach Valentine’s Day, we start off the month learning about and celebrating Groundhog Day. We make fun crafts like this paper plate groundhog craft, and we work on counting with our groundhog first to twenty mats. We learn all about groundhogs with this collection of books and this science unit. The Groundhog Animal Study unit is packed full of engaging February pre-k activities that the students will love. 

After Groundhog Day, we jump right into everything Valentine’s related! I make different versions of this heart-matching puzzle activity that will help my students review both math and literacy skills. Using it for number recognition is one of my favorite heart-themed math activities! 

We also make this thumbprint craft to hang on a bulletin board or send home as decoration. It’s the easiest Valentine’s pre-k craft that works on fine motor skills too! 

After Valentine’s Day, we make sure to celebrate Dental Health Month by learning all about taking care of our teeth with this science unit. I told you there were SO many topics and themes to study during February!

Using the February Pre-k Centers

Once you purchase and download the center bundle, you can look through everything that you now own! You’ll notice how each subject is broken into five different categories of centers, and then there are four centers within each category. 

Once you have taken a peek at the centers, make a list of what needs to be printed, or better yet, print them out immediately! Once printed, you can organize your materials into piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. We always recommend laminating as much as possible so that you can reuse parts of the centers each and every year without re-printing everything. 

Next, you can decide how you want to use the centers. They are created to have one type of each center per week in the month, but some teachers enjoy using them all month long. Additionally, many teachers use some of the centers, like the poetry centers or write the rooms, as whole-class lessons and activities. 

No matter how or when you choose to use the materials with your students, our greatest piece of advice is to model, model, model! Show your students exactly how to use the materials and let them know your expectations. This will help your students become more independent with the centers over time.

February Literacy Activities for Pre-k

Pocket Chart and Match-Up Activities

A pocket chart and match-up center is always fun! If you don’t have a pocket chart, just use a space big enough for your students to spread out the pieces, like on a table or the floor. The four February pocket chart and match-up centers include a beginning sound match-up, a letters-words-pictures sort, a sentence scramble activity, and a sequencing activity that students can use to practice retelling the steps of mailing a valentine. After Thanksgiving, staff and students are 100% aware that all we have to do is make it a few more weeks until a nice long holiday break. But somehow, those “few more weeks” are the busiest, longest weeks ever. They’re filled with assessments, conferences, planning, prepping for January…the list goes on and on. 

So, since we already know December will be rough, we do our best to plan easy and fun activities that will keep our students learning and engaged. I love using match-up activities in my centers or as morning work like this editable sight word activity and this Christmas tree number match-up. We keep the little ones busy with exciting wintertime science experiments like these salt crystal ornaments and hot chocolate experiment. As we enjoy our hot chocolate, we read our collection of Christmas books.

Using the December Kindergarten Math and Literacy Centers

Once you purchase and download your centers, look through all 40 files to see what you now own! Make a list of things to print, cut, copy, laminate, etc. Trust me, the more you prep to make them last, the easier the prep will be for years to come. If you print on cardstock and laminate the center materials this year, next year you’ll have a lot less to do.

When you introduce the centers to your students, either all at once, in chunks, or one week at a time, make sure to set explicit expectations for how you want the centers to be used. Model each activity and help your students with them the first few times. This will enable your students to be a lot more independent as the month goes on!

There is no one “right” way to use these centers. You can use them in your stations, as whole group activities, as sub plans, etc. Make them work for you. Once you take a look at all of the centers, you may even find that some of them fit perfectly with your kindergarten winter thematic units, so you may split them up to be done at different times during the season.

We start off the month by recovering from Halloween. Then, we begin to discuss and learn about Veteran’s Day. We talk about and explore the importance of the day with this Veteran’s Day Emergent Reader.

After Veteran’s Day, we start to prepare for Thanksgiving! I just love this holiday. There is something about taking the time to think about and discuss everything that we’re grateful for that just fills my heart with so much joy. Our littlest learners share their gratitude with this I Am Thankful turkey activity and our thankful turkey craft. Books from this collection of Thanksgiving stories are a great way to start the conversation!

My favorite November learning themes include turkeys, hayrides, pumpkins, scarecrows, and football! But I especially like focusing on turkeys. In science, we learn all about wild turkeys in this animal study. We enjoy our turkey pre-k centers with activities like this turkey name building. Using the November Pre-k Math and Literacy Centers

I always suggest starting off by looking through and familiarizing yourself with everything and taking notes of what you plan to use right away. There are so many options within each resource, including both color and black & white versions, so it’s a good idea to look through and decide which option you’re going to print and use. 

Once you make a list and start printing, separate the activities into piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. Remember that the more activities you laminate to reuse, the less prep the centers will be next year! 

Probably the best piece of advice I can give you when using these centers to review your pre-kindergarten November lessons is to model, model, model. Model how to use each type of center for your students, and set clear and concise expectations for using them. This will help your littlest learners be more independent while they are working and playing.

I love to engage my students in exciting activities from this collection of Halloween STEM ideas. With all the excitement that comes with October, STEM activities are perfect for giving the students a chance to work together to complete festive challenges. We dive more into science with our apples and pumpkins science units.

To celebrate everyone’s favorite October holiday, we play several rounds of this Halloween bingo game. It gives my students a chance to practice their listening skills, and it is great to play when you have parent volunteers come in! To keep with the Halloween theme, we engage in some gross and spooky fun with this blood cell model science activity and read as many ghost and goblin Halloween books as we can.

Like every other month, we work on our literacy skills with this review journal. I also love to use the October math journal as a way to transition to the next subject of the day. Using the October Math and Literacy Centers

So once you purchase and download the October centers, then what? We’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to feel confident using the first grade math and literacy centers in October. 

First, make sure you look through the entire file after downloading. Check out everything that you now own and make a list of things you want to print at school (or just print them right away!). After that, organize the materials in piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc.

We dive into pumpkins with our stacks of books all about pumpkins and “fill” our wheelbarrows with pumpkin CVC words and editable pumpkin sight words.

We can’t even think about this time of year without exploring Halloween themes. These October science experiments are spooktacular and entertaining. Our kindergarteners love rhyming with bats and working on numbers, letters, and their fine motor skills with these bats. We add in Halloween STEM activities throughout the month to get us excited and engaged.

I like to start off each school day of the month by giving my students a page to work on from our October Daily Literacy Review Journal, the perfect morning work! And on the same note, I use our October Daily Math Review Journal pages as a transition into our math block or as a way to end math. They are the perfect little grab-and-go activities!

I don’t know about you, but something about the anticipation of wearing costumes and getting candy keeps my kids at a level ten of excitement all month long. Instead of fighting it, I choose to play into it. I fill my classroom with October-themed games, fall crafts, and Halloween books to make our learning fun. 

I teach about pumpkins with this explore a pumpkin activity and use easy activities like this jack o’lantern memory game to practice whatever skills my kids need to review. I shelve my own fear of spiders to teach my kids all about them with this exciting spider science unit. I even use spaghetti to make this spider sensory bin. Since we spend so much of August practicing routines and learning procedures, we’re ready to kick things up a notch by September. One of my favorite things about September is that I get to teach while using adorable fall themes. In science, we explore apples with this science unit and become little scientists with these September science experiments.

I put apple activities like this editable sight word game and this number match in my centers or morning work bins. Students enjoy building their names in an apple bucket and playing this fun apple pick and color activity. And we work on fine motor and scissor-cutting skills with this apple craft.

Now that the kids are back into a routine at school, we really want to encourage learning as much as possible. So I’m always looking for creative ideas for math and literacy centers that will find my students having fun while learning. This is why we created our September Kindergarten Math and Literacy Centers. Using the September Learning Centers for Kindergarten

Once you purchase and download your centers, it’s time to get started! You’ll be able to look through all five categories for each subject of centers. From there, you can make a list of which centers you need to print, copy, laminate, cut, etc. If you don’t think you’ll use all of the centers, you can always print a copy and put them in your sub folder! 

One thing that makes these centers great is that there is no one “right” way to use them! Maybe you do math centers and literacy centers at different times of the day, and you can use all of the centers during those times. Maybe you have one center time that includes both subjects, so you might pick and choose which centers to use. Or maybe you’ll put some of the activities in centers and use some of them, like the poetry and write the room activities, as whole class instruction and activities. Make these kindergarten resources work for you and your classroom!

Whichever way you choose to use them, make sure to explicitly teach and model the activities for your students so that they can learn to be independent with them. Set yourself up for success by laminating the reusable pieces, so that you will have them ready for the following September as well!

Write the Room

Write the room activities can be used as a center or as a whole class activity! These activities are my students’ favorites because they love getting to use clipboards and roaming around the room. The four math write the room centers for September will help your students practice comparing numbers, putting numbers in order, completing patterns, and sorting and graphing. 

Write & Wipe Activities

Another perk of September is that we get to welcome the season of fall! We love celebrating the start of fall with some of these read-alouds and this exciting fall bingo game. We dive into language arts with our apple writing center and apple blends match-up. Maintaining the apple theme, we work on addition and subtraction with this editable activity. The month wouldn’t be complete without some seasonal science added in. My students have a blast with these four September science experiments and this apple boats STEM experiment.

I start and end the day with daily literacy and math journals to ensure my students keep their math and literacy skills sharp. I pull out the September Daily Literacy Journal each morning for a quick morning work/check-in activity. The September Daily Math Journal is perfect for either an exit ticket at the end of the day or to end my math block. The ease of using journals like these is so helpful. Using the September 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers

After you purchase and download the September math and literacy bundle of centers, you’ll now own 40 centers to use with your students. Because 40 centers can be a lot, we’re here to offer some guidance on how to best use, and how to set up, the 1st grade math and literacy centers in September. 

First, you’ll want to look through each center that’s included. If you’re not by your printer, make a list of the centers that you want to print. Look through the different variations of each center and decide if you’ll use the color or black and white version, and which recording sheet, or level of activity, you’ll use with your students for the centers that have multiple options for differentiation.

Once printed, organize your centers in piles or folders of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. We highly recommend prepping these centers the month ahead of time so that you’re not rushed. When you look through the centers, you’ll see lots of adorable fall themes that are perfect for September. But some of the centers could definitely fit in other months as well, so feel free to store something away for sub plans, etc., if you don’t plan to use all 40 centers during this month. 

There are two more pieces of advice that I can offer. Number one: laminate as much as possible to make them last so you can reuse them next year. Number two: explicitly and clearly model the centers for your students before letting them go. Trust me, they will do great once they understand the directions and your expectations. 

Last but not least, don’t forget to be excited about these centers for your students and to have fun with them! The best part about integrating math and literacy centers into 1st grade September curriculum is that it makes every day a little more fresh and exciting.

1st Grade September Math Activities 

Dice Games

You and your students will enjoy the four first grade math games that are included in the dice games category. How to Use the September Pre-K Math and Literacy Centers

Enhancing pre-k learning with these September Math and Literacy Centers is a guaranteed way to get your students learning, all while having fun. But how does one prep, manage, and store 40 centers for one single month? Let me share some of my favorite tips!

After you purchase and download the September centers, take a look at every center. Send the ones you know you’ll use for sure to the printer, or write down the file names to easily locate them at another time. Make piles of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. My greatest suggestion is to make sure you prep the centers ahead of time; don’t wait until the night before! Another great idea is to print off whatever you don’t think you’ll be able to fit in and put into your substitute folder/bin. 

All of this prep work may sound intimidating at first, but trust me, putting in the work now, especially printing on cardstock and/or laminating anything that can be reused, will make your future self SO grateful.

Most importantly, always make sure to model the centers and give your students clear examples of what’s expected of them. After the first few times, your students will be pros. And this will be even more helpful if you decide to do this every month by grabbing the full year of pre-k centers!

We enjoy write and wipe activities for practicing math skills so much that we gave you four to use during September! The activities focus on these skills: identifying numbers versus letters, 2D shapes, counting, and identifying colors. Pocket Chart Activities and Match-Ups

The four pocket chart activities and match-ups are a surefire way to enhance your fall pre-k literacy materials. Your students will have a blast sequencing the steps of how to rake leaves, unscrambling sentences about apples and colors, practicing sorting letters and words, and playing a fun, editable hide-and-seek game. These centers work great in a pocket chart center, a rug center, or any table where the pieces can be spread out. 

Write & Wipe Centers and Puzzles

Puzzles and write and wipe centers are so easy to set up and fun for the kids to do. I definitely suggest making these sturdy with cardstock and lamination, but the write and wipe activities could also be put in a page protector. As always, we’ve given you black and white options in case you want them to be consumable. The September write and wipe activities for pre-k literacy are focused on writing skills. One activity will have the students tracing lines and working on grip, control, and other pre-writing skills. The other write and wipe activity is focused on tracing uppercase and lowercase letters. Your pre-k students will be ready to write after working on these two activities! The two September literacy puzzles were made to practice upper and lowercase letters and rhyming words. 

Write the Room 

Have you used write the room activities with your students before? The first time is a little crazy, something about giving them all that freedom makes the classroom a bit hectic, but after a few times, they get into the routine of the activity and love the independence of it. It can be difficult to find poetry that is appropriate for our littlest learners, which is why we’ve created 3 original poems and taken one familiar nursery rhyme for you to use with your students. This month’s poems are all about September, ice cream, and school, and your students will have a blast reading and listening to these simple poems. Each poem comes with pocket chart materials, a poetry notebook to work on, and a poetry journal. A lot of teachers choose to use these resources as whole-class lessons and activities, but putting them in a center works too, especially if you read them to your students first and get them familiar with the poetry. You and your students will love using these pre-k September poetry centers.
