As we begin the month, we count down to the 14th with first grade Valentine’s math activities like this skip counting match-up. It’s so easy to incorporate hearts and love-themed materials all month long!

And, of course on Valentine’s Day, we play this Valentine’s Day bingo during our class party. I love to get the little candy hearts from the store for them to use as markers. 

Since February is just past the halfway point of the school year, it’s so important that my students continue to review their math and literacy skills that they’ve worked hard to learn all year. That’s why I always fit in a page from this February literacy journal and this math journal each school day during the month. 

Another fantastic way to incorporate all of the holidays and themes into your students’ learning is to use these First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers. But you can split the centers up and even use some of them as whole group work, morning work, sub plans, etc. The options are endless when you have so much at your fingertips!

Using the February First Grade Centers

Once you purchase and download the First Grade February Math and Literacy Centers, it’s time to explore! You can look through all of the different categories to see the centers that you now own. I always suggest starting by making a list of which ones you like and for what purpose, that way you can add them to your lesson plans easily.

Before printing, make sure to check out the whole file of each center. All of them come with both color and black & white options, and many come with differentiation options as well. Once you decide what you want to use, send to the printer. If possible, print on cardstock or other heavy paper for things you want to laminate and reuse.

Once a hard copy is printed, I like to use Post-it notes to write down how many copies of each thing I need. Then once I make copies, I can get to laminating and cutting. It’s a lot of prep work, but the more I laminate now, the less I have to prep next February! 

Once everything is ready, decide how you’ll introduce the centers to your first graders. Some teachers choose to model one a day, while others do batches all at once. Most importantly, make sure to set clear expectations for each type of center to help your students be as independent as possible while working and playing.

Literacy Centers for February

Writing Centers

Another perk of September is that we get to welcome the season of fall! We love celebrating the start of fall with some of these read-alouds and this exciting fall bingo game. We dive into language arts with our apple writing center and apple blends match-up. Maintaining the apple theme, we work on addition and subtraction with this editable activity. The month wouldn’t be complete without some seasonal science added in. My students have a blast with these four September science experiments and this apple boats STEM experiment.

I start and end the day with daily literacy and math journals to ensure my students keep their math and literacy skills sharp. I pull out the September Daily Literacy Journal each morning for a quick morning work/check-in activity. Using the September 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers

After you purchase and download the September math and literacy bundle of centers, you’ll now own 40 centers to use with your students. Because 40 centers can be a lot, we’re here to offer some guidance on how to best use, and how to set up, the 1st grade math and literacy centers in September. 

First, you’ll want to look through each center that’s included. If you’re not by your printer, make a list of the centers that you want to print. Look through the different variations of each center and decide if you’ll use the color or black and white version, and which recording sheet, or level of activity, you’ll use with your students for the centers that have multiple options for differentiation.

Once printed, organize your centers in piles or folders of what needs to be copied, laminated, cut, etc. We highly recommend prepping these centers the month ahead of time so that you’re not rushed. When you look through the centers, you’ll see lots of adorable fall themes that are perfect for September. But some of the centers could definitely fit in other months as well, so feel free to store something away for sub plans, etc., if you don’t plan to use all 40 centers during this month. 

There are two more pieces of advice that I can offer. Number one: laminate as much as possible to make them last so you can reuse them next year. Number two: explicitly and clearly model the centers for your students before letting them go. Trust me, they will do great once they understand the directions and your expectations. 

Last but not least, don’t forget to be excited about these centers for your students and to have fun with them! The best part about integrating math and literacy centers into 1st grade September curriculum is that it makes every day a little more fresh and exciting.

Dice Games

You and your students will enjoy the four first grade math games that are included in the dice games category. Using the End-of-Year 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers

The 1st Grade Math and Literacy Centers for June come with 40 centers to use with your students, which is a lot. We know that you’re super busy already and don’t have any time to waste, so we thought we’d offer our favorite tips and tricks for using these centers. 

• Once you purchase and download the centers, look at everything that comes inside the zip file, especially the directions. Make a list of centers that you’ll definitely be using and any other thoughts or notes that come to mind at first glance.
• Make a plan to prep the centers. Figure out what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut. We highly suggest laminating as much as possible to make prep easier for the following year since a lot of materials can be reusable. 
• Once you know the centers that you’ll be using, make a plan to roll them out to your students. If you have our other months of centers, your students will already be familiar with the format. All you’ll have to do is show them the new centers and remind them of the directions! If this is your first month using our centers, make sure to explicitly model and teach each type of center so that when you give them to your students, they can work as independently as possible. 
• Remember that there is no right way to use these centers. You can use some of the activities as whole-class work or even in small groups. Make the centers work for you!
• Don’t be afraid to differentiate as needed! Make the puzzles self-checking, use the different recording sheets for the write the room activities, etc. As much as we try to make the centers as well-rounded as possible to meet the needs of first grade teachers around the world, we know that every class of students is different and you may need to modify for your students to thrive.
• Don’t forget to think ahead to next June! Print things that can be reused like the write and wipe activities, roll and cover game, writing cards, pocket charts and match ups, etc. on cardstock and laminate for future use.

Dice Games

I love to use games with dice to engage my students because of how easy and fun they are. Rolling dice keeps their little hands busy and the materials are simple and easy to prep. The four June dice games include a “Build a Bug” activity, a “Color by Code” worksheet, a “Roll and Cover/Color” activity, and a “Roll and Graph” center. These first grade June math centers will help your students practice adding, subtracting, and identifying coins. 

Partner Games

My students are always begging me for activities that allow them to work with their classmates. Using the June Kindergarten Centers

Look, I get it, 40 centers is a lot to work with. You are already stressed out, overworked, tired, and have way too many things on your to-do list. But trust me, these June kindergarten learning centers are worth the work. Plus, once you prep them for this year, next year will be a whole lot easier. 

To start, after you purchase and download the centers, make sure you look through everything you have at your disposal. Some teachers like to make a list of the skills and centers and which ones they definitely want to use. These end-of-year centers can be used in centers or stations, or even as whole-group or small-group activities. 

After you decide which centers you want to use and for what, start printing or make a list of what needs to be printed. Separate printables into piles of what needs to be laminated, copied, cut, etc. As you do this, make a note of what could be printed on cardstock and laminated to save for future years. Using the May Centers

This collection of spring math and literacy activities for first grade comes with 40 centers to use with your students this May. Forty centers might sound overwhelming at first, so let me share some of our favorite tips for using these spring educational resources with your students. 

• After you purchase and download the centers, take inventory on what you have. Look at the different types of centers and the various centers of each type. Make a list, if not printing right away, of which centers you want to print out. 
• Make a plan of what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut. Figure out which centers can be made reusable so that they don’t need to be prepped again every year.
• Decide how you’ll use and introduce the centers. Maybe you will show students one version of each type of center a week. Or maybe you’ll decide to use some centers as other types of activities. Remember, there is no “right” way to use these, make the first grade May learning centers work for you!
• Remember to model each center for your students and to set clear and concise expectations for what you expect from them during center time. These activities are repetitive and your students will become more independent after doing them a few times.

During this hectic month, it’s important that we keep our young learners busy. So we make cute projects for Mother’s Day like this Mother’s Day flower craft or this Mother’s Day thumbprint art. Using the May Kindergarten Centers

Poetry Centers
These kindergarten-friendly poems are perfect for using with your students this spring. With poetry journals and notebooks for four different poems, your students will be poetry pros by the end of the month. There are three original May poems about Mother’s Day, spring, and May, and one nursery rhyme, an old favorite – Mary Had a Little Lamb. Students will practice reading, repeating, and finding rhymes and different words in each poem using the center materials.

Write & Wipe Activities and Puzzles
Both of these activity types should definitely make it to your laminate list! For the month of May, you’ll get two puzzles practicing blends and segmenting CVCC words. You’ll also get two write and wipe activities that focus on digraphs and segmenting CVCC words as well. These fun reading activities for kindergarteners will be great to have on hand this spring. 

Writing Center

These centers are made to be used in pocket charts or somewhere they can be spread out, like on a table or on the floor. With the sequencing activity, students can practice putting the steps of building a sandcastle in order with hands-on materials. Your kindergarten students can practice finding the same middle sound with a CVC pocket chart activity and also practice putting spring sentences together with a sentence scramble activity. Lastly, the sight word hide and seek activity is one of my favorite sight word games for kindergarten.

Write the Room Activities for Literacy
Write the room centers are the best way to get your students out of their seats and reviewing skills. April Literacy Centers for Kindergarten

Write & Wipe and Puzzles 
I use puzzles and write and wipe activities for my early finishers. They are easy to store and the kids can pull them out whenever they have a few extra minutes. The April puzzles and write and wipe activities cover these skills: blends, CCVC words, CVCC words, CVC words, and manipulating the ending sound in words. 

Poetry
Your students can practice rhyming and reading during April with 3 spring-themed poems and 1 nursery rhyme. The poems are about spring, rain, and Earth Day while the nursery rhyme is a common favorite called “Are you Sleeping?” Use the provided poetry notebooks and journal materials to have your students do so much more than read. Interacting with each poem will keep your students engaged and learning all month long. 

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
Since you’ll probably be talking about plants and gardening this spring, you’re sure to love the sequencing activity that comes in this month’s bundle. Most years, April brings Easter, although sometimes it sneaks in at the end of March. We celebrate Easter with these engaging read alouds and this fun bingo game. We study plants with our Plants Science Unit and learn about the life cycle of a flower with this craftivity. 

Later on in April, we celebrate Earth Day and discuss the importance of taking care of the earth with this emergent reader. We can even help our first graders practice telling time with these spring time puzzles.

Using these April Centers for First Grade

With 40 springtime centers to use with your first grade students, it can understandably be overwhelming to decide how to set them up and use them in your classroom. Here are some tips for you to check out after you purchase the centers.

• Plan ahead! Do you have the full year of our first grade centers? Prep the centers during the previous month so that you can decide what needs to be printed, copied, laminated, and cut before you need to use them. 
• The first time you use the centers, it will probably be a lot of work, but printing on cardstock and/or laminating can help you keep many of the pieces for the following year. Pro tip: before storing the centers away, make a class set of all the black and white consumables, like the recording sheets, and store them away with the other materials. Your future self will thank you!  
• Pick and choose what centers you’ll want to use with your students during the month. Will you model all of the activities at the beginning of the month? Or will you do it one week at a time? There is no right answer, do what’s best for you!
• Set clear and understandable expectations for each type of center. I like to model each activity explicitly before I let my students anywhere near the materials. After they do each center a few times, they’ll be accustomed to the format and the need for help from you will be a lot less!

April Literacy Centers and Activities for First Grade

Poetry
With three April poems and one nursery rhyme, your students will learn to enjoy poetry as much as we do! With age-appropriate language, students can practice rhyming, identifying patterns and parts of speech, and visualizing the poems. The Earth Day poem in this set of April poems is definitely one of my favorites!

Pocket Chart and Match-Ups
The pocket chart writing activities for April include a “How to Grow a Plant” sequencing and writing activity and a springtime sentence scramble. The pocket chart match-ups include a sight word hide and seek game and a vowel team match-up for your first graders to play together. 

Write & Wipe and Puzzles 
Your students will have fun building puzzles while practicing vowel teams and contractions this April. The write and wipe activities are easy to do with a page protector (if you don’t laminate them) and a dry erase marker. Your first graders can practice spelling words with digraphs and different word families while having fun with these activities.

Partner Games
My students love any chance they get to play games with their classmates. That’s why these partner games are perfect for each month of the year! For April, your first graders can play together while practicing fractions, number order, coins, and adding and subtracting. I like to use these games for my early finishers too. 

Dice Game Centers
Hand your students some dice (preferably foam, because ouch, my ears!) and let them have at it with these engaging, springtime dice games. Students will have a great time building a bunny, coloring by code, coloring/covering, and graphing with these dice game activities. 

Match-Up Activities and Puzzles
Covering skills such as fractions, money, place value, and telling time, your first graders will be so busy with these match up activities and puzzles that they won’t even realize they’re learning! 

Write the Room
With the warmer weather and nicer days, your students will be itching to get outside and run around as much as possible. Unfortunately, with spring weather comes rain, so there will surely be days where we’re stuck inside all day. St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17th every year. I love to spend the month incorporating leprechauns, shamrocks, and gold coins into our learning. Some of my favorite read-alouds for the month come from this St. Patrick’s Day book list. And I love to build in hands-on St. Patrick’s Day activities like this shamrock thumbprint craft and this First to 20 math game. 

When it comes to literacy centers for the month of March, I use various St. Patrick’s Day word building resources for students to learn from – like these CVC puzzles and blends match-ups. But my favorite way to help my students practice encoding and blending words is with these St. Patrick’s Day word building centers. With one bundle, I can help my students practice CVC, CVCC, CCVC, and CVCE words, all with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Getting the St. Patrick’s Day Word Building Activities Ready

My favorite way is to print out the color version of the activities, then laminate and cut them. I separate each type of word (CVC, CVCC, CCVC, CVCE) into baggies until I want to use them. 

Another option is to print the black & white versions on colored copy paper. I highly recommend laminating the centers no matter which version you decide to use, as it will boost the longevity of the activity. We all know that when non-laminated paper gets in the hands of 20+ kindergarteners, those centers aren’t lasting very long! 

And of course, if necessary, you can print the black and white versions of the centers on regular copy paper, laminate them, and then cut them. If you are working with a child at home, they will enjoy coloring the activities themselves.

The best part about these St. Patrick’s Day word building centers is that after the initial prep of printing, laminating, and cutting, these centers are easy to pull out and use with your students all March long! Take a look at how I keep my language arts materials organized.

Using the St. Patrick’s Day Word Building Activities

What better way to switch up your literacy centers this March than with these fun St. Patrick’s Day word building activities for kindergarten? After you’ve done the initial prep, these vocabulary building activities can be placed in a center using baskets or bins, or in a pocket chart. I like to have a pile for the pot of gold word cards in one place and the gold coin letters in another.

Students can start with a pot of gold card, name the picture, and then search through the gold coins to find the correct letters. One idea to extend their learning is to provide writing paper with this activity. Students can list the words that they spell, or you can even challenge them to write sentences with the words. My students love to show what they know and have me come check out their gold coin words, and I love how I can differentiate for whatever my students need at that time of year with the 4 different word options.
